AraBat secures €280K to scale bio-based battery recycling

Italian startup wins public funding to build pilot facility for extracting lithium and rare earths from batteries using agricultural waste like orange peels.

AraBat secures €280K to scale bio-based battery recycling

AraBat, a venture founded in 2022 and tucked in the southern Italian region of Apulia, has secured €280,000 in public funding through Italy's TecnoNidi program. The money will help build a pilot facility for what the company describes as an unconventional approach to battery recycling: using agricultural waste to extract valuable metals from spent lithium-ion cells.

The grant represents a bet by Italian authorities on a process that substitutes traditional industrial solvents with weak organic acids and biomass from crops like oranges and artichokes. For AraBat, the award marks another milestone in a year of public support. The startup pulled in €70,000 from Italy's MICS Futuro Made in Italy circular economy competition in March, bringing disclosed government funding to €350,000.

Whether citrus peels can displace the harsh chemicals that dominate industrial battery recycling remains an open question. But AraBat's progress suggests at least some institutional investors see potential in biology-based metallurgy.

Biomass Meets Battery Waste

The core technology, which AraBat calls AraMet, blends mechanical pre-treatment with what the company terms "bio-based leaching." That means water, diluted citric acid solutions below 1.5 molar concentration, and plant material—orange peels from Sicily, say, or artichoke leaves from Puglia's farms. The output: hydroxides of nickel, manganese and cobalt, plus lithium carbonate, all critical components in electric vehicle batteries.

AraBat claims it has advanced the process to technology readiness level 6 or 7, industry jargon suggesting the method works beyond laboratory conditions. The company points to a pilot run in Canada as proof of concept. An Italian patent covers the core process, and AraBat says it's pursuing extensions across the EU, United States, Canada, China, India, South Korea and Japan. Patent applications, of course, don't guarantee commercial viability.

The startup faces considerable competition. Europe's battery recycling landscape includes established players like Fortum Battery Recycling, Belgium's Umicore, Germany's Duesenfeld, and the recycling arm of troubled Swedish battery maker Northvolt. In North America, Redwood Materials and American Battery Technology Company have raised substantial capital. Li-Cycle, a Canadian firm, operates globally but has faced its own operational challenges.

Partnerships in Japan and Canada

AraBat signed a development agreement with TAIYO YUDEN, a Japanese electronics manufacturer, to test metal recovery from end-of-life lithium batteries and multi-layer ceramic capacitors. The collaboration emerged from EIT Global Outreach's Calling2Scale Gunma program, which pairs European startups with Japanese corporations. Biomass for the tests will come from Gunma Prefecture, though AraBat hasn't disclosed commercial terms.

A more substantial commitment sits in Canada. In October 2023, AraBat inked a binding joint venture with EVSX and St-Georges Eco-Mining to establish an industrial processing plant in Puglia. AraBat would hold 51 percent of the venture, according to regulatory filings from St-Georges. The plant's construction timeline and capital requirements weren't detailed in available disclosures.

Regulatory Tailwinds

European battery regulations provide a policy backdrop that could favor innovative recycling approaches. The EU Batteries Regulation, in force since 2023, mandates lithium recovery rates of 50 percent by the end of 2027, climbing to 80 percent by the end of 2031. Recycling efficiency for lithium-based batteries must hit at least 65 percent by the close of 2025.

Layered on top is the EU Critical Raw Materials Act, effective in 2024, which aims for domestic capacity to recycle a quarter of strategic raw materials by 2030. Those targets create urgency for scalable recycling methods, though they don't guarantee market share for any particular technology.

A Small Team With Big Ambitions

CEO Raffaele Nacchiero, who holds a PhD, leads a compact team that includes COO Giovanni Miccolis, CFO Leonardo Renna, CTO Leonardo Binetti, and CMO Vincenzo Scarano. LinkedIn data suggests the company employs between two and 10 people, with six publicly listed profiles. That's a lean operation for a venture chasing industrial-scale battery processing.

AraBat formally incorporated in Foggia on February 22, 2022, though informal work began in October 2020. The company set up a Delaware entity, AraBat US Corp., in March of this year—a standard move for non-US startups eyeing American investors or partnerships.

The startup's trophy case includes the Eni Award's Joule for Entrepreneurship Special Mention in October 2022 and a win in the Cleantech & Energy category at Premio Nazionale Innovazione that same year. AraBat also claimed the Canada-Italy Innovation Award in 2023 and graduated from the XPRENEURS accelerator, run by Munich's UnternehmerTUM.

Funding Opacity

CBInsights records show a $0.11 million grant from Italy's MOST Mobility Competition in May 2024 as AraBat's last tracked funding. The company declined to say whether it has raised equity capital, a reticence that's not uncommon among early-stage European hardware startups but makes it difficult to gauge the venture's financial runway.

Public grants total €350,000 this year, enough to fund pilot work but likely insufficient for full commercial buildout. Battery recycling infrastructure demands significant capital—Redwood Materials has raised over $2 billion, while Li-Cycle's struggles underscore how expensive and complex these operations become at scale.

AraBat's orange-peel pitch is certainly novel. Whether it can scale beyond pilot facilities and compete with entrenched chemical processes is the question that will define the company's next chapter.
