Arbital launches trading terminal with $1.35B in volume

YC S26 fintech by ex-Aevo team hits $1.35B traded across 2,700 users in 7 months, unifying memes, tokenized stocks, and perps in a single non-custodial platform.

Arbital launches trading terminal with $1.35B in volume

Seven months of quiet testing produced an unexpected result for Arbital: $1.35 billion in cumulative trading volume across 2,700 users, the Singapore-based startup disclosed Thursday on X. The numbers suggest traders are hungry for something the company's three founders spotted while working at Aevo, another crypto derivatives platform.

What Arbital sells is consolidation. The Y Combinator-backed trading terminal merges three historically separate markets into a single interface: meme coins, tokenized stocks, and perpetual futures. Users keep one balance, held in their own non-custodial wallets.

The appeal is partly practical. Traders can now take leveraged bets on Bitcoin futures (up to 40x, powered by Hyperliquid), buy tokenized Apple shares at 3 a.m. via xStocks' 640-plus equity offerings, or chase the latest Solana-based meme coin without logging out. Funds never leave the user's control, a feature that resonates in an industry still processing the FTX collapse.

But Arbital's ambitions extend beyond retail convenience. The platform quietly rolled out Arbital MM, an automated market-making tool aimed at users who want to earn spreads and rebates by providing liquidity across multiple decentralized exchanges. The bot runs what the company calls "maker-only strategies" on venues including Hyperliquid, GRVT, Perpl, Pacifica, and Decibel. Built-in risk controls cap inventory exposure and trigger circuit breakers when realized losses cross preset thresholds.

That product appears to be gaining traction, though the timeline is somewhat murky. Monthly volume reached $435 million as of August 2024, according to Y Combinator's industry directory. The all-time-high daily volume hit $41 million. Both figures represent growth from $750 million cumulative as of early June, when KuCoin Insights published an explainer on the platform. Foresight News, a Chinese crypto outlet, reported in late August that Arbital had "officially launched" and exited its testing phase, though the company's own disclosures remain sparse.

The founders bring relevant experience. Karon Pangestu, Steven Mulyawan, and Vincent Owen joined Aevo early and helped push daily active users from 1,000 to 30,000 in five months, Y Combinator noted in a recent LinkedIn post. They also participated in launching Aevo's token, which peaked at a $3.8 billion valuation before landing listings on Binance and Bybit. Arbital's directory page lists just three employees, suggesting the operation is still lean.

Under the hood, Arbital MM uses time-weighted average price logic with fee-aware quoting. The idea is to capture maker rebates and farm points across multiple protocols simultaneously. KuCoin Insights described the approach in June as "democratizing professional-grade, maker-only liquidity strategies," though whether retail traders will grasp the intricacies of cross-DEX market making remains an open question.

Several platforms have already integrated the tools. Aptos Labs announced in June that "Arbital x Decibel is live," bringing what it called "institutional-grade market making" to Decibel on Aptos. Dango Perps ran a week-long "Grand Royale" points campaign with Arbital from June 10 to 17, according to campaign posts archived by TwStalker.

The tokenized stock component relies on xStocks, which launched on Hyperliquid in mid-August. The framework offers equities "fully collateralized 1:1 by underlying assets held with a regulated custodian," per xStocks' documentation. That setup enables 24/7 stock trading on decentralized rails, though regulatory clarity around tokenized securities remains a work in progress in most jurisdictions.

Arbital Pte. Ltd. lists backing from Y Combinator's Summer 2024 cohort on its website footer. The startup has not disclosed other investors or a formal funding round, which is typical for companies this early. Whether the volume figures translate into sustainable revenue, and whether regulators will allow tokenized stocks to trade freely, will determine if Arbital's bet on market consolidation pays off.

For now, the company seems content to let the numbers speak. Seven months, $1.35 billion, 2,700 traders. It's a start.
