Austin Startup Raises $26 Million to Tackle Transformer Supply Crisis
Fluxco, an Austin-based company operating an AI-powered marketplace for electrical transformers, announced on July 23 that it had raised $26 million in seed funding co-led by Congruent Ventures and 8VC. The round included participation from Koch Disruptive Technologies, White Star Capital, Trust Ventures, Overture VC, New System Ventures, and Cubit Capital, though the company declined to disclose its valuation.
The startup has entered a market strained by what the Wall Street Journal characterized as wait times "as long as five years" for custom-built transformers, some of which weigh up to 80,000 pounds. Those delays have turned into a critical bottleneck as data centers race to secure power infrastructure for AI computing facilities.
By late July, Fluxco had processed orders for more than 1,000 transformers across 34 projects, according to MarketScreener. Founder and CEO Brian Tochman disclosed on LinkedIn that the company logged $30 million in gross merchandise value during its first 60 days of operation, all on overseas supply because US OEMs can't keep up.
The procurement challenges aren't new. Austin Energy's public meeting minutes from January 2023 reveal the municipal utility relaxing specifications and sourcing refurbished units to manage shortages well before the current AI-driven surge in demand. What has changed is the scale and urgency.
Fluxco's platform handles the full procurement lifecycle for utilities, data centers, and industrial buyers who historically navigated fragmented supply chains themselves. The company uses AI to assist with specification design, then distributes requests for proposals to vetted manufacturers, compares bids, and tracks orders from purchase through factory acceptance testing, delivery, and warranty management. Leasing options are also available.
"We've mapped the global supply of transformers across more than 150 OEMs," Tochman said in a July 8 interview with CleanEcon. The company markets its service under the tagline "One Call. Global Power" and positions itself as a "Chief Transformer Officer" for customers.

Tochman co-founded Trust Ventures in 2018 according to Crunchbase. The firm participated in Fluxco's seed round. His earlier experience includes a vice president role at Platinum Equity and positions as president and chief operating officer at Kasita, a modular housing startup. Fluxco's August job postings spanned transformer design engineering, full-stack software development, and bid coordination for utility RFPs.
The timing aligns with broader investor interest in power infrastructure. Venture capitalists poured capital into solid-state transformer technology companies including DG Matrix and Heron Power earlier this year, TechCrunch reported, though Fluxco's marketplace focuses on conventional oil-filled and dry-type transformers used across utility, data center, and industrial applications.
S&P Global hosted an April webinar addressing transformer bottlenecks and copper price volatility, underscoring industry-wide concern about supply chain constraints. In February, Fluxco published a compliance guide on Foreign Entity of Concern regulations affecting transformer buyers seeking eligibility for U.S. clean energy tax credits. The policy shift expanded domestic content requirements under recent legislation, adding another layer of complexity to procurement decisions.

The company said it had vetted more than 100 global suppliers for supply chain transparency as of that February publication date. For an industry accustomed to long lead times and established vendor relationships, Fluxco is betting that a centralized marketplace backed by AI tools can offer something utilities and data center operators increasingly need: speed.
