Stacks Lands $23M Series A from Lightspeed for Finance Close AI

London-based Stacks raises Series A led by Lightspeed to automate month-end close operations. The AI platform has 30+ customers cutting close time by up to 8 days.

Stacks Lands $23M Series A from Lightspeed for Finance Close AI

Every finance team knows the ritual. As month-end approaches, reconciliation spreadsheets multiply, variance reports demand explanation, and accountants brace for late nights shepherding journal entries through enterprise resource planning systems that feel engineered to resist them.

Albert Malikov watched this play out repeatedly during his years building product at Uber Money and later leading Plaid's European operations. Now, as CEO of London-based Stacks, he's betting that AI agents—not just AI-assisted features—can collapse those closing cycles from weeks to days.

On February 19, Stacks closed a $23 million Series A led by Lightspeed Venture Partners to prove it. The round drew continued backing from EQT Ventures, General Catalyst, and S16VC, all of whom participated in the company's $10 million seed last year. Total known funding now sits somewhere between $33 million and $35 million since the company's 2024 launch—a timeline that suggests Malikov and his co-founders have moved quickly to gain traction.

The Lightspeed Bet

Lightspeed's involvement signals more than capital. The firm, which recently closed north of $9 billion across new funds in December, has been hunting for AI infrastructure opportunities that go beyond chatbot interfaces. Partner Alex Schmitt, who led the investment, described Stacks' approach as "agentic automation" rather than copilot tooling—a distinction the firm clearly believes matters in operational finance.

For Malikov, the Series A validates a specific architectural choice: Stacks doesn't bolt AI onto existing close management software. Instead, the platform runs what the company calls an "AI-native parallel ledger architecture" that integrates directly with ERPs like NetSuite. The system handles bank reconciliation, transaction matching, and variance analysis—the grunt work that stretches finance teams thin every thirty days.

The AI agents, according to company materials, learn from how accountants resolve exceptions and gradually automate recurring tasks while preserving audit trails. It's the kind of pitch that sounds straightforward until you consider how many edge cases live inside month-end close processes at any given enterprise.

Early Customer Wins

Stacks now serves more than 30 customers, including recognizable names like Epidemic Sound, publishing group Future, healthcare data firm Datavant, diamond marketplace Nivoda, and fintech Cleo. The company claims it has automated 95% of reconciliations across its customer base and collectively saved upward of 100,000 hours annually—figures that, if accurate, represent meaningful operational leverage.

Some finance teams have reportedly shaved eight days off their close cycles. The company hasn't disclosed median improvements, which would offer a clearer sense of typical results versus outlier success stories. Still, cutting a week from a notoriously rigid workflow is the kind of outcome CFOs notice.

Alongside the funding announcement, Stacks unveiled a Reporting & Analysis suite featuring AI Flux Analysis capabilities, expanding beyond pure reconciliation into the explanatory work that often consumes finance managers after the numbers are locked.

A Crowded Playing Field

Here's the challenge: Stacks is hardly alone in this market. BlackLine and FloQast—incumbent close management platforms with deep enterprise roots—have rolled out their own AI agent features in recent months. Finaloop, another VC darling, raised a $35 million Series A from Lightspeed in 2024 targeting adjacent finance automation workflows. The category is heating up, and the incumbents have distribution advantages that startups rarely overcome through technology alone.

Whether Stacks' parallel ledger architecture proves differentiated enough to carve out a defensible position depends on execution velocity. The company is hiring across offices in London and Amsterdam, using the fresh capital to expand both its product suite and customer footprint. Malikov will need to move upmarket quickly—and demonstrate measurably superior outcomes compared to entrenched competitors—to avoid becoming another well-funded also-ran in the enterprise software graveyard.

The promise of AI-native finance automation is real. The question, as always, is whether this particular bet pays off before larger players absorb the innovation or replicate it at scale. For now, Stacks has runway and momentum. The close cycle clock, however, keeps ticking.
