Theo launches tokenized silver backed by $40M in leases

The blockchain finance platform brings silver leasing income on-chain with thSLVR, targeting institutions amid tight physical markets and record-low lendable supply.

Theo launches tokenized silver backed by $40M in leases

A blockchain finance platform is betting that industrial demand for silver can be packaged into a digital token that pays investors both rental income and metal price exposure, a structure that has attracted $40 million in active and committed leases but offers scant public documentation about how it actually works.

Theo, a year-old fintech that previously tokenized gold and Treasury bonds, said Tuesday it had opened beta access to thSLVR for institutions and approved investors. The new product channels lease payments from refiners, mints, and manufacturers who borrow physical silver under what the company describes as standard market terms. Token holders get those rental payments while still tracking the spot price of the metal itself.

It's a model that could appeal to investors hunting for yield in an asset class that typically just sits in a vault. But Theo has declined to disclose several operational details that would normally accompany a financial product launch: where the silver is held, which blockchain supports the token, what fees investors pay, or even basic contract addresses that would let outside observers verify claims on a public ledger.

As of mid-September, the company's website contained no technical documentation for thSLVR.

A Market Under Strain

Theo's pitch rests on a silver market that has tightened considerably. Iggy Ioppe, the company's chief investment officer, told CoinDesk in an email that silver is entering a sixth consecutive year of supply deficits, according to Silver Institute projections. The Silver Institute, an industry research group, projected a shortfall of 46.3 million ounces for 2026 in its World Silver Survey published in April.

London vaults, historically the deepest pool of lendable silver, held roughly 136 million ounces available for trading and leasing by late September. But 83 percent of those inventories are locked inside physically backed investment products, according to the Silver Institute's World Silver Survey 2026 data from April, leaving a shallow market for actual borrowers.

"In that setup the lease rate is the real signal, not the spot price," Ioppe wrote, offering his view on the market dynamics. "thSLVR brings the economics of silver lending onchain."

Silver lease rates briefly spiked to 34.9 percent in early October 2025 during what Bloomberg described as a historic squeeze, though rates have since retreated. Theo did not disclose what rates thSLVR currently earns or passes through to investors.

The structure relies on counterparty credit, not just metal in a vault. Silver corresponding to thSLVR gets leased to institutional borrowers under arrangements backed by parent-company guarantees, according to the company. That shifts some risk from the physical commodity to the financial strength of corporate guarantors, a detail that matters more when lease rates are elevated and borrowers face pressure.

Theo's $40 million lease book depends on those borrowers continuing to make payments. The company frames the parent guarantees as a risk mitigant, though it has not disclosed which entities are providing those backstops or what rating agencies think of their creditworthiness.

The product expands the collateral behind thUSD, Theo's yield-bearing stablecoin, which already draws on tokenized gold and Treasury exposure. Theo launched its gold token, thGOLD, in late January and offers thBILL, which accesses Treasuries managed by Wellington Management and Fidelity International through partnerships with Standard Chartered's Libeara unit and FundBridge Capital.

Theo raised $20 million in April 2025 from a group led by Hack VC and Anthos Capital. Backers included Manifold Trading, Mirana Ventures, Flowdesk, and several crypto-native firms, plus individual investors from Citadel, Jane Street, HRT, Optiver, IMC, 5 Rings, and JPMorgan. Founders Abhi Pingle, Arijit Pingle, and TK Kwon previously traded at Optiver and IMC, quantitative trading shops known for hiring mathematically inclined risk-takers.

The company said in an April release that it is targeting $1 billion in thUSD deposits by the end of 2026 and has made the product available in more than 200 countries, though it has not clarified which jurisdictions allow retail participation.

Theo enters a tokenized commodities market that RWA.xyz pegged at roughly $4.9 billion spread across 130 products as of this week. Existing silver tokens generally offer spot price tracking but not lease income. Kinesis KAG pays yields from transaction fee-sharing rather than physical lending. Aurus tSILVER represents one gram of accredited silver per token without distributing lease payments. Denario Silver Coin allows co-ownership of allocated Swiss silver but keeps any rental income for itself.

Whether investors will embrace a product that combines commodity exposure with counterparty credit risk, wrapped in blockchain rails and light on disclosure, remains an open question. For now, Theo is restricting access to institutions and addresses it has vetted directly, a structure that defers some of the transparency debates that have dogged other tokenized assets.

The beta rollout continues.
