Wayout Water Raises $2.8M Extension to Scale Plastic-Free Water Tech

Swedish water tech startup closes oversubscribed Series A extension and taps ex-Nestlé Waters CEO to lead global expansion of decentralized drinking water systems.

Wayout Water Raises $2.8M Extension to Scale Plastic-Free Water Tech

Stockholm's Wayout Water closed an oversubscribed SEK 26.6 million extension round—roughly $2.5 million—earlier this year, capping what the company describes as a pivotal period of growth. But it's the executive hire that arrived just weeks earlier that may matter more: Matthias Riehle, who spent years running Nestlé Waters across the Middle East, North Africa, and Asia, signed on as Working Chairman.

For a startup built on the premise that bottled water infrastructure should be dismantled, bringing in someone who once profited from it is a curious move. Then again, perhaps not. Riehle knows exactly which markets still run on trucks full of plastic bottles—and where Wayout is positioning itself to slip in with a different model entirely.

The Funding Trail

The latest injection follows a €6 million Series A that closed in January 2023, led by Climentum Capital with Gullspång Re:food and Raiven Capital participating. Wayout also picked up a strategic check from Swedish investor Notecom Invest earlier this year, though the company declined to disclose terms. According to a LinkedIn post from the team, demand for the extension round exceeded availability—a claim that, if true, suggests growing investor appetite for decentralized water solutions.

Still, the sums are modest by venture standards. Wayout is playing a long, infrastructure-heavy game in a category that doesn't lend itself to the kind of breakneck scaling that tech investors typically chase.

What Riehle Brings

Riehle's tenure at Nestlé Waters took him through some of the planet's most water-stressed regions—places where bottled water isn't a luxury but a necessity, and where the environmental cost of that dependency is staggering. His appointment signals the company's ambition to move beyond pilot projects and boutique hotel deployments into markets where the stakes, and the plastic waste, are considerably higher.

The timing wasn't accidental. Riehle was appointed as Working Chairman effective June 1, just as the extension was closing. One gets the sense that Wayout wanted both the capital and the Rolodex in place before pushing into its next phase.

Micro-Factories in a Box

Wayout's core product—containerized water purification units that combine filtration, reverse osmosis, UV treatment, and remineralization into a single autonomous system—is complex in execution. Each unit can churn out up to 20,000 liters daily, distributed via reusable stainless steel kegs rather than disposable plastic. The systems can operate off-grid using renewable energy and come equipped with IoT sensors for remote monitoring.

The company frames this as "Water-as-a-Service," leasing rather than selling the hardware—a recurring revenue play familiar to anyone who's watched software economics migrate into hardware categories. Wayout's older investor materials claim one system displaces around 6.5 million plastic bottles a year and cuts more than 500 tons of CO2 compared to conventional bottled water supply chains. (Whether those figures hold up across different geographies and use cases is harder to verify without independent audits.)

Where the Systems Are Going

Wayout has spent recent months assembling partnerships that hint at geographic and sectoral ambitions. In April, the company announced a collaboration with PE Nerex to place systems in Ukraine, including a memorandum of understanding covering up to 40 units in the Kherson region—a war-adjacent deployment that underscores the potential role for decentralized water infrastructure in crisis zones.

The company also lists Siemens and Alfa Laval as technology partners, lending industrial credibility to what might otherwise be dismissed as a niche play. Wayout operates a showroom in Dubai's Alserkal Avenue and has drawn attention in UAE media for projects aimed at cutting plastic bottle use in hospitality. An earlier solar-powered installation in Tanzania's Serengeti National Park offered a proof of concept for remote, off-grid environments.

The Hard Part

With Riehle steering commercial strategy and fresh capital on hand, Wayout is positioning itself to push into regions where centralized water infrastructure is either absent or inadequate: the Middle East, Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa, parts of Europe. The company has publicly cited interest across all of those markets.

But interest and adoption are different animals. Wayout's model requires convincing institutional buyers—hotels, hospitals, offices, governments—to swap out familiar supply chains for leased containerized units. That's a longer, messier sales cycle than venture investors typically tolerate, especially in emerging markets where contract enforcement and payment terms can be unpredictable.

The question isn't whether Wayout's technology works—it does. The question is whether the unit economics pencil out at scale, and whether the company can navigate procurement bureaucracies and entrenched supplier relationships fast enough to justify the capital it's raising. Riehle's experience suggests Wayout thinks it can. The coming year will reveal whether that confidence is warranted.
