WizCommerce Launches AI Platform for Wholesale After 3.5-Year Build

B2B commerce startup emerges from stealth with suite of AI-powered tools targeting underserved wholesale distributors. Platform automates ordering, quoting, and catalog management.

WizCommerce Launches AI Platform for Wholesale After 3.5-Year Build

For an industry that still runs on phone calls and trade show order forms, wholesale distribution seems an unlikely candidate for an AI revolution. But WizCommerce is betting otherwise.

The Washington, D.C.-based startup has emerged from an unusually long development period—three and a half years—with what it's calling a full-stack AI platform purpose-built for wholesale distributors. The company announced its formal launch this month, riding momentum from an $8 million Series A closed last August and a roster of AI agents that promise to automate the kind of tedious back-office work that's plagued wholesalers for decades.

CEO Divyaanshu Makkar used LinkedIn to mark the occasion, unveiling a refreshed brand identity that positions WizCommerce as "the AI platform for modernizing wholesale sales and operations." A webinar on March 3 showcased the platform's AI-powered catalog capabilities to wholesale brands—the kind of coordinated rollout that signals a company ready to step out of build mode and into the market.

Whether that market is ready for them is another question entirely.

Four Products, One Thesis

WizCommerce didn't build a single piece of software. It built four.

WizShop handles the B2B ecommerce storefront. WizOrder is an AI-first mobile app for field sales reps. WizStudio uses AI to generate product imagery and catalog content. WizPay embeds payments directly into the purchasing flow.

The company calls these "AI Co-Workers," though that's admittedly the sort of terminology every enterprise software vendor has adopted lately. What's different here—or so WizCommerce argues—is specificity. Rather than slapping "AI-powered" onto existing workflows, the platform deploys autonomous agents for discrete tasks: entering orders, generating quotes, chasing follow-ups, cleaning up the messy product data that bedevils every distributor.

In February, the company launched "Ella," an AI agent designed specifically to automate order and quote processing. That followed "Kai," an AI sales assistant introduced around the time of the Series A announcement. The agents sync with existing ERP systems rather than replacing them, a pragmatic choice given how deeply legacy systems are embedded in wholesale operations.

The Stubborn Economics of Wholesale

Here's the thing about wholesale distribution: it's huge, fragmented, and maddeningly resistant to digitization.

As of 2022, ecommerce represented just 15.4% of distributor revenues, according to the Distribution Strategy Group. That's up from 14.2% the year before—progress, sure, but glacial compared to the consumer internet. (These figures, while the most recent available from industry sources, predate the current wave of AI-enabled platforms and may not capture the acceleration happening now.) Even larger distributors who've made digital transformation a priority often struggle with execution.

WizCommerce is targeting the middle of the market: wholesalers in home décor, furniture, textiles, lighting, and general merchandise. These are businesses where trade shows still matter, where inside sales teams work the phones, where reordering happens via call-in rather than click-through. They lack the budget for custom software builds or the IT staff to wrangle complex enterprise platforms, but their buyers—retailers, mostly—increasingly expect the same digital-first experience they get everywhere else.

The pitch is that WizCommerce is purpose-built for these workflows rather than adapted from retail or generic B2B tools. That means native support for trade show ordering, rep-based selling, EDI integrations, marketplace syndication. The features that horizontal platforms treat as afterthoughts.

Whether that's enough differentiation remains to be seen.

Building in the Dark

The company's origin story is a little hazy. LinkedIn says 2020; the press kit says 2021. (Official sources conflict on the founding year, though the company's recent LinkedIn post marking the launch refers to starting "3.5 years ago," which would place it in late 2021.) Either way, the founding team—Makkar, along with co-founders Mayur Bhangale and Vikas Garg, who serves as chief product officer—spent years building before going public with their August Series A.

That round, led by Peak XV (the rechristened Sequoia India) with participation from Blume Ventures, Z47, and Alpha Wave, came with a few data points. As of August, more than 700 sales reps and upwards of 300,000 buyers were using the platform.

Those numbers are now more than six months old, and the company hasn't shared updates. The team has grown—LinkedIn estimates put it somewhere between 51 and 200 employees—with offices in Bengaluru, Gurugram, and Abu Dhabi alongside the D.C. headquarters. Makkar previously worked at Bessemer Venture Partners and EY-Parthenon, the kind of resume that suggests someone who's spent time thinking about markets from the investor side before jumping in.

A Crowded Field, Sort Of

The competitive landscape is simultaneously thick and sparse, depending on how you slice it.

Fashion wholesalers have NuORDER and JOOR. Larger distributors have enterprise platforms like OroCommerce and BigCommerce's B2B Edition. Food distribution has GrubMarket's WholesaleWare; beverage has Encompass. Orderchamp introduced a B2B Order Portal last April. Prokeep launched its Order Engine for distributors in September.

The fact that all these launches happened within months of each other probably isn't coincidence. AI capabilities are maturing. Buyer expectations are shifting. The wholesale software market, dormant for years, seems to be waking up.

WizCommerce's bet appears to be that its multi-product suite and AI automation layer offer something the piecemeal alternatives can't. The company has showcased customer speakers from Ganz USA and The Howard Elliott Collection at recent events, though formal case studies remain thin on the ground.

The Hard Part Starts Now

Plenty remains unclear. Pricing isn't public. Updated customer metrics haven't been released. The exact scope of AI automation—how much actually runs autonomously versus requiring human oversight—gets glossed over in marketing materials.

The company's recent acceptance into the Industrial Supply Association hints at expansion beyond home goods and décor, though whether that's intentional vertical expansion or simply broader applicability isn't spelled out.

For a platform that spent three and a half years in development with $8 million from respected investors, the easy part—the building—is behind them. What comes next is harder: proving the AI automation actually delivers on efficiency promises, that the integrated suite solves real pain points better than duct-taped alternatives, and that mid-market wholesalers will adopt software that fundamentally alters workflows they've relied on for decades.

March's webinars and association memberships are opening moves. The real validation lies ahead, in the unglamorous work of customer acquisition, retention, and results. In wholesale, perhaps more than anywhere else, the proof isn't in the pitch deck. It's in whether buyers actually use the thing.
