YC-Backed FullSeam Launches AI Employee to Automate Finance Tasks

Serial founders with Opendoor exit debut AI agents that handle AR, AP, and reconciliation by logging into existing accounting tools—joining heated race to automate finance.

YC-Backed FullSeam Launches AI Employee to Automate Finance Tasks

Thomas Dowling and his co-founders aren't pitching another dashboard. They're not even selling a copilot.

What they're offering—through a startup called FullSeam that emerged from Y Combinator earlier this year—is something considerably more aggressive: AI agents that log into your accounting software, handle your accounts receivable, process invoices, chase down late payments, and reconcile your books. The agents don't suggest. They execute.

It's a bold return for the three entrepreneurs. Dowling, along with Geoff Segal and Aaron Coppa, previously built TaxProper, which Opendoor acquired in late 2022 for $10 million in cash (with another $3 million paid out a year later, according to SEC filings). That company was processing over $1 billion annually in property tax payments for Opendoor's real estate empire by the time of the sale. Now they're back, this time aiming at a broader—and messier—problem: the tedious grunt work that bogs down finance departments everywhere.

The timing is deliberate. AI agents have become the industry's buzzword of choice, but FullSeam's founders are betting most finance leaders remain skeptical of software that promises to "assist" while still requiring constant human babysitting. Their pitch is simpler, if riskier: let the AI do the actual work.

Inside the Machine

FullSeam's agents—what the company calls an "AI-powered finance and accounting teammate," sidestepping the usual software terminology—operate inside the systems finance teams already rely on. QuickBooks. NetSuite. Stripe. Xero. The list goes on.

According to the company's launch materials from mid-February, the agents follow up with customers about overdue invoices, collect vendor documentation, submit invoices through payment portals, code transactions to the general ledger, post entries to ERPs, match payments, and reconcile bank accounts and credit cards. When something doesn't compute—an exception, an anomaly—the system routes it to a human, context included.

The company was formally registered in Delaware and began filing for New York foreign business status in early December, state records show. Privacy policies and terms of service went live on January 12, shortly before the public debut.

Dowling, a Rhodes Scholar who studied at the University of Illinois and Oxford, previously advised the Chicago mayor and held a gubernatorial appointment in Illinois. Coppa served as TaxProper's founding engineer. The trio has kept the operation lean so far—there's been no funding announcement beyond Y Combinator's standard backing, and Demo Day wrapped up in late March.

Early adopters are sharing numbers. Deferred, a qualified intermediary handling 1031 tax-deferred exchanges, claims it's now automating 100% of referral payouts and reclaiming more than 10 hours each month. The company processes payments for over 10,000 referral partners in real time, a volume that would be punishing to manage manually. CEO Judd Schoenholtz offered a testimonial featured in a December case study.

Belfry Software, which builds operating systems for security guard companies, reports that 95% of invoices now get auto-validated before they reach the finance team. Disputes have dropped by 40% to 60%, and the company is saving an additional 10-plus hours monthly. CEO Jordan Wallach's endorsement appeared in another late-December case study.

Both companies wrestle with high transaction volumes and reconciliation nightmares—precisely the sort of grind FullSeam is designed to eliminate.

In late February, Dowling took to LinkedIn to showcase a new feature: an "agentic AR inbox" that pulls together late payments, payment promises, invoice corrections, and follow-up tasks, all integrated with billing systems, CRM data, and email threads. The agent manages the entire workflow from start to finish, he wrote, perhaps with a note of pride.

A Crowded, Noisy Market

FullSeam is hardly alone in chasing finance automation with AI. The space has gotten crowded—and loud.

Pilot unveiled its "AI Accountant" in early February, billing it as fully autonomous. BILL launched "BILL AI" last October, reporting that fully automated bill processing jumped more than 80% in the months since. Ramp has woven AP agents into its Bill Pay product. FloQast rolled out an "AI Agent Builder" last September, targeting close and controllership workflows.

Legacy players are moving, too. Tipalti and Vic.ai introduced agent capabilities in 2025. Digits earned a "Cool Vendor" nod from Gartner for its "Agentic General Ledger." Even Workday announced an Agent Partner Network expansion last fall to bring enterprise-ready finance agents into its ecosystem.

Y Combinator's own cohort this winter included several finance AI startups. Balance and Cranston AI both pitch "full-stack AI accounting." JustPaid.ai zeroes in on AR automation. Tabular targets accounting firms with an "AI autopilot." A January survey from Capterra found that 94% of U.S. accounting teams are already adopting AI tools in some form. Industry watchers predict that by year's end, 40% of enterprise apps will have embedded task-specific AI agents.

So what sets FullSeam apart? The founders are betting on integration strategy. Instead of asking finance teams to migrate data or rip out their existing systems, FullSeam's agents work within the software stack already in place. The company's website emphasizes configurable rules, approval workflows, and audit logs—guardrails designed to ease the compliance anxieties that keep CFOs up at night. Onboarding, the company claims, takes days, not months.

Pricing remains undisclosed, and the sales process is demo-led. The website's primary call to action: "Book a demo."

The Trust Question

Whether FullSeam's "no rip-and-replace" pitch gains traction will ultimately come down to execution—and trust. Finance leaders will need to feel comfortable handing over login credentials to their most critical systems, letting an AI agent poke around inside QuickBooks or NetSuite, posting entries and moving money. That's not a small ask, even if the software comes with audit logs and approval gates.

The founders have one successful exit behind them, a credential that carries weight in venture circles. Now they're testing a bigger thesis: that the market is ready for software that doesn't merely analyze or advise, but acts. In a world drowning in copilots and assistants, FullSeam is betting finance teams want something more decisive.

Whether they're right is still an open question.
