YC-Backed HEVN Launches AI-Powered Payroll for Global Contractors

The fintech startup offers 'agentic' workflows that let Claude and other AI assistants handle cross-border payments—positioning against Deel with lower fees and custom automation.

YC-Backed HEVN Launches AI-Powered Payroll for Global Contractors

Imagine Claude Code, the AI coding assistant, not just debugging your software but also onboarding your overseas contractors, generating their agreements, and wiring them payment. No human intervention required—just a string of commands and a few safety checks to make sure the bot doesn't accidentally drain your bank account.

That's the premise behind HEVN, a startup fresh out of Y Combinator's Spring 2026 batch, which launched in April with what sounds like either the future of global payroll or a cybersecurity nightmare waiting to happen. Or possibly both.

The company is betting that as AI agents become more capable, they shouldn't just write code and summarize emails. They should handle the tedious, compliance-heavy work of paying people across borders—what the startup calls "agentic payroll." For distributed teams juggling contractors in a dozen countries, each with their own banking systems and regulatory quirks, the pitch has a certain appeal. Whether it's premature is another question entirely.

Building the Rails for Robot Accountants

HEVN operates as a B2B payments platform, offering named virtual bank accounts spanning the US, EU, UAE, and Hong Kong. The mechanics are familiar enough: ACH and SEPA transfers, SWIFT for older infrastructure, the UAE's FETS network. The company also layers in stablecoin transfers, faster and often cheaper than traditional rails, and claims coverage across 82 countries with contractor cards issued in over 100.

Where things get interesting—or depending on your risk tolerance, unnerving—is how the platform was designed. Roughly 70% of HEVN's transaction volume already flows through its API, according to the company's own figures. They built a command-line interface and an MCP server (last updated June 13, 2026) that pipes those tools directly into AI coding assistants: Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf. An agent can spin up a contract, batch invoices, check exchange rates, initiate a transfer. No dashboard. No human.

The safety mechanisms matter here, perhaps more than the founders initially let on. HEVN implements confirmation gating for commands involving money movement—anything touching actual transfers—behind confirmation prompts. Idempotency keys prevent duplicate transactions. Companies can carve out sub-accounts for individual agents, each with its own spending cap and approval chain. It's a tacit acknowledgment that handing the company credit card to a large language model requires guardrails that go beyond a polite "Are you sure?"

The Founders Know Crypto, Which Explains a Lot

HEVN's team—CEO Peter Volnov, CPO Nik Briuzgin, CMO Pavel Mitsevich, and CTO Andrei Zhevlakov—all came from HOT Labs, where Mitsevich helped scale a wallet to 15 million monthly users and north of $100 million in total value locked. That crypto pedigree shows up in the architecture. HEVN runs on stablecoin infrastructure and uses non-custodial smart contract wallets, meaning users technically keep control of their keys. Whether mainstream CFOs will embrace that approach or balk at the whiff of decentralization remains to be seen.

The timing, though, reflects something real. Global payroll platforms have matured into behemoths—Deel reportedly crossed $1 billion in annual recurring revenue, per Windsor Drake market intelligence. Rippling isn't far behind. But those platforms, for all their sophistication, still assume a human is clicking through dashboards, reviewing invoices, manually approving payments. They're built for people, not for the autonomous agents that startups are increasingly deploying to handle repetitive back-office work.

HEVN isn't the only one chasing this. A competitor called Plane is marketing similar "agentic era" payroll, and the legacy HCM provider isolved announced autonomous AI agents for HR and payroll on June 16, 2026. But HEVN seems to be structuring the entire product around agent-first access from the jump, rather than bolting AI onto an existing human workflow.

Undercutting Deel, One Transaction at a Time

The pricing is where HEVN throws down the gauntlet. According to the company, it's a flat $1 per transaction with zero monthly fee per contractor. They advertise foreign exchange fees between 0.25% and 0.5%, currency conversion at 0.1% to 0.3%, and free stablecoin withdrawals.

Run those numbers against Deel's menu: $49 per contractor per month for basic management, $599 per employee per month for full employer-of-record, $29 per employee per month for global payroll. A startup with a dozen international contractors could save several thousand dollars a month with HEVN's model—assuming, of course, that the transaction-based pricing holds as volume scales and that the lean team can actually deliver the compliance infrastructure those fees are theoretically covering.

The UAE offering dials it up further. Zero percent on USD-to-AED exchange, a 40 AED monthly account fee, 360 AED setup, and onboarding for free zones like DMCC or ADGM in under a week. There's 0.5% cashback on card spend and a Xero integration for accounting exports. It's clearly aimed at the wave of digital nomads and crypto-adjacent startups setting up shop in Dubai.

One caveat worth flagging: according to HEVN's own disclosures, the company is a fintech platform, not a bank. Banking services flow through regulated partner institutions. The company mentions DASP regulation for virtual accounts and references VARA compliance in the UAE via a tie-up with Align Labs, but doesn't publicly name all its banking partners or spell out the full regulatory stack. For a product handling cross-border money movement, those details matter—especially if things go sideways.

The YC Launch: Brex for Everyone Else

HEVN's Y Combinator launch post, published roughly two months back, positioned the company as "Brex for Non-US Internet Companies." The framing was sharp: virtual accounts, USD cards with zero FX markup, global banking aimed at startups outside the United States. The ask to fellow YC founders was simple—pilot customers, warm introductions.

Dealroom lists a $125,000 seed round in March 2026 with Y Combinator's backing, though funding beyond the standard YC check isn't public. The team remains small, which is either admirably lean or worryingly thin depending on how fast they need to move and how much regulatory overhead sits in their pipeline.

Whether HEVN can genuinely chip away at Deel's market share—or even survive long enough to find out—hinges on execution, navigating a thicket of international financial regulations, and whether this "agentic payroll" narrative catches fire beyond the early-adopter crowd already running AI agents in production. The core wager, though, is straightforward: the companies building infrastructure for AI agents right now may end up owning critical rails in a few years.

For finance teams already letting Claude Code touch production systems, that shift might not feel futuristic at all. It might just feel like Tuesday.
