YC-Backed Platus Raises $3.3M to Automate Legal Ops for EU Founders

The German legaltech startup, backed by YouTube co-founder Jawed Karim and Moonfire Ventures, cuts company incorporation from weeks to days via API-first infrastructure.

YC-Backed Platus Raises $3.3M to Automate Legal Ops for EU Founders

The promise sounds almost too good for anyone who's tried to incorporate a company in Germany: three days instead of two months.

Platus, a Munich-based legaltech startup that emerged from Y Combinator, is wagering it can turn that pitch into reality—and has convinced a roster of investors, including YouTube co-founder Jawed Karim, to back the vision with $3.3 million in seed funding. The round, which the company disclosed earlier this spring, drew support from Moonfire Ventures, Zeno Ventures, Combination VC, and Orange Collective, alongside several angel investors from the YC network.

At its core, Platus describes its product as API-first legal infrastructure—essentially, turning the notoriously slow machinery of European company formation into something that looks more like a software integration. For founders accustomed to Silicon Valley's same-day incorporation services, the contrast with Germany's bureaucratic reality has long been jarring. Platus aims to close that gap.

The startup operates the consumer-facing brand Beglaubigt.de in Germany (you'll sometimes see it referenced as Openlaw in local press), but its broader ambition extends beyond a slick website for entrepreneurs. The real product is an Incorporation API that orchestrates the entire process: drafting documents, scheduling notary appointments, filing with Germany's Handelsregister and Transparenzregister, and navigating the labyrinth of commercial registries.

It's not just digitization. The company has built relationships with roughly 300 notaries across Germany and embedded itself into the actual workflow—choreographing handoffs between legal professionals, government offices, and founders who'd rather be building products than chasing signatures.

When M&A Deals Hit Notary Bottlenecks

Alexander Sporenberg, one of Platus's managing directors, spent time leading acquisitions at Razor Group, the Berlin-based Amazon aggregator that briefly touched unicorn status back in late 2021. During Razor's aggressive dealmaking phase, Sporenberg kept running into the same problem: German notary and court backlogs that could stall transactions or throw timelines into chaos.

His co-founder, Felix Gerlach, arrived via the identity verification world, having previously co-founded Passbase before its assets were picked up by Parallel Markets in early 2023. Both had logged enough hours battling German red tape to recognize the contours of a business opportunity. Gerlach even showed up on a Startuprad.io podcast—titled, with a certain weariness, "How to Start a Company in Germany."

Platus went through YC's fall cohort in 2024, the batch that began on September 29 and ran through early December in San Francisco. Since then, the startup has been methodically rolling out product lines: GmbH and UG formations, partnership structures, holding entities, digital business addresses equipped with what it calls an AI-powered mailroom, and ongoing bookkeeping tools.

The company says more than 25,000 customers have used the platform, with upwards of 5,000 incorporations processed each year. Those numbers, if accurate, suggest Platus has carved out a meaningful foothold—though the German market for company formation services is fragmented and notoriously hard to measure with precision.

Infrastructure Play, Not Just a Form-Filler

Where Platus diverges from competitors like firma.de or Recht24/7 is in its distribution strategy. Rather than simply competing for direct traffic, the startup has baked its workflows into the infrastructure that European founders already rely on. Partnerships with Qonto, Holvi, sevdesk, and Kontist by Shine mean entrepreneurs can incorporate a company at the exact moment they're opening a business bank account or configuring accounting software.

It's the kind of horizontal integration that makes sense on paper but is devilishly hard to execute—coordinating across fintech platforms, notaries, and government registries requires the sort of operational precision that most early-stage startups lack. Whether Platus can maintain that coordination as it scales remains an open question.

The fresh capital will fund expansion within Germany, layer on additional registry processes, build out the bookkeeping side of the business, and—perhaps more ambitiously—begin a push into other European markets. Each new jurisdiction brings its own legal idiosyncrasies, notary customs, and bureaucratic quirks. Germany's system is slow, but it's at least somewhat predictable. Replicating the model in France or Italy or Spain might prove considerably messier.

The Bigger Bet

Platus is making a familiar wager: that European regulatory friction represents not just a nuisance but a structural arbitrage opportunity. Founders who've spent years in the U.S. often express genuine disbelief at how long it takes to accomplish basic corporate tasks on the other side of the Atlantic. The gap between expectation and reality has only widened as more European startups adopt American-style growth playbooks.

Still, there's a reason legal processes move slowly in Germany—monopolies, court capacity constraints, and deeply embedded professional guilds that resist disruption. Platus isn't dismantling that system; it's building a layer on top of it, automating what can be automated and routing around bottlenecks where possible. That approach has limits.

The involvement of Jawed Karim, through his Y Ventures vehicle, lends a certain credibility. Karim rarely makes splashy investments, and his presence suggests he sees something durable in the model—or at least finds the Europe-specific problem set compelling enough to warrant attention.

For now, Platus has distribution, a functional product, and a team that understands the pain point intimately. Whether that's enough to reshape how Europe does business formation—or whether the startup will find itself constrained by the same bureaucratic machinery it's trying to circumvent—will take more than three days to answer.
