ZebraEye's AI Eye Disease Tech Gains Traction After Accelerator Run

Kazakhstan-founded medtech startup raised $200K through Silkway Accelerator in 2023 for FECD detection software, now seeking to scale rare disease diagnosis globally.

ZebraEye's AI Eye Disease Tech Gains Traction After Accelerator Run

In the crowded field of AI-powered diagnostics, where startups routinely promise to revolutionize healthcare with machine learning, one small company is placing its chips on a condition most people have never heard of.

ZebraEye, a medtech venture targeting Fuchs Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy—a degenerative eye disease that gradually steals vision—secured $200,000 in investor commitments through Kazakhstan's Silkway Accelerator in late 2023. The funding came during the program's fourth cohort, a joint effort between Astana Hub and Google for Startups. Not exactly the kind of Silicon Valley headline that sets venture capital on fire, but for a startup working at the intersection of rare diseases and emerging markets, it was a start.

CEO and co-founder Yana Ten has positioned the company's software as capable of detecting FECD with better than 95% accuracy in under a minute, analyzing images from OCT scans and specialized endothelial microscopes. Those figures, it's worth noting, come from company statements rather than peer-reviewed clinical studies—a distinction that matters considerably in a sector where regulatory scrutiny and validation determine survival.

Training on Two Continents

The company's core technology rests on access to a substantial image library: some 100,000 scans from UC San Diego's Shiley Eye Institute, according to an interview Ten gave in October 2023. By then, ZebraEye had already begun working with clinics across Kazakhstan, including early talks with the Astana Vision chain. The startup pitched a pricing model around $50 per image for U.S. customers under subscription terms, though whether those rates held as the company matured remains unclear.

What's striking is the geography. Dealroom.co lists ZebraEye's headquarters in Palo Alto, with a founding location in Abu Dhabi, yet much of its actual presence—the partnerships, the press mentions, the accelerator appearances—centers on Kazakhstan and Central Asia. It's a multi-jurisdiction setup that speaks to the realities of building a medical AI company in 2024 and beyond: you incorporate where the capital is, you train your models where the data lives, and you pilot where the market gap yawns widest.

Momentum, but Not Yet Money

Following Silkway, ZebraEye kept moving through the startup circuit. There was Plug and Play Uzbekistan in 2024. An appearance at Web Summit Qatar the same year, where Doha Venture Capital and Qatar Science & Technology Park reportedly took interest—though interest, in the unforgiving language of venture finance, is not the same as a term sheet.

In March 2025, ZebraEye picked up a $40,000 grant from Astana Hub. The company has also been associated with QazInnovations as an investor, though the specifics of that relationship—amount, timing, structure—remain opaque in public filings.

Team size? The startup operates with somewhere between two and ten employees, a range that suggests either extreme leanness or a reluctance to update LinkedIn profiles.

The Validation Gap

Here's the thing about rare disease diagnostics: the narrower the condition, the harder the commercial path. FECD affects a sliver of the population, which means fewer potential customers, longer sales cycles, and the perpetual challenge of convincing health systems to adopt a tool for something most doctors encounter infrequently.

ZebraEye's real test isn't the accelerator circuit or the investor interest at trade shows. It's regulatory clearances. Clinical trials that go beyond internal benchmarks. Proving the algorithm works not just on curated datasets from a single institution, but across the messy reality of varied patient populations, different imaging equipment, diverse clinical settings.

Central Asian markets, where specialized ophthalmological care remains scarce, offer ZebraEye a foothold. Perhaps more than the founders initially expected. But scaling a medtech platform globally demands a level of validation and capital that $240,000 in grants and early commitments won't cover.

The company is still seeking partnerships and funding to expand its diagnostic platform. Whether it can navigate the treacherous passage from promising prototype to commercially viable product—well, that's the story still being written.
