Zynk Raises $5M to Unlock Liquidity in Cross-Border Payments

Hyderabad fintech backed by Hivemind and Coinbase Ventures uses stablecoins to eliminate pre-funding, targeting a $320B market with 70% monthly growth since launch.

Zynk Raises $5M to Unlock Liquidity in Cross-Border Payments

There's a peculiar irony at the heart of global payments: In an age when money moves at the speed of light, most international transactions still require companies to park millions in dormant bank accounts scattered around the world—just in case.

Zynk, a Hyderabad-based fintech barely six months old, thinks it has found a workaround. The startup announced this week that it closed a $5 million seed round back in August, led by Hivemind Capital and backed by Coinbase Ventures, Alliance DAO, and a handful of other crypto-focused investors. The round was structured as a SAFE, and the company isn't disclosing its valuation—standard practice for early-stage rounds these days, though it does leave the question of terms tantalizingly open.

What Zynk is selling, essentially, is a bet that stablecoins can solve one of the oldest headaches in cross-border finance: pre-funding. Payment providers have long been forced to lock up capital in so-called nostro and vostro accounts, correspondent banking arrangements that exist in multiple currencies and tie up liquidity that could be deployed elsewhere. It's an expensive necessity. Zynk's pitch is that by embedding liquidity directly into its network and enabling settlement via stablecoins or traditional fiat rails, it can free customers from that burden entirely.

Whether that promise holds up at scale remains to be seen.

Who's Building This

The founding team brings an interesting mix of pedigree. Prashanth Swaminathan logged more than a decade at Morgan Stanley's London office and now serves as a venture partner at Woodstock Fund. Manish Bhatia was the CTO of Amazon Pay India before moving into a senior role at Lendingkart, a lending platform. Then there's Abhishek Pitti, founder and CEO of IBC Media—a somewhat unexpected background for a payments infrastructure play, but perhaps indicative of the cross-pollination happening in India's startup ecosystem.

Since launching quietly in April, the company claims it's seen 70% month-over-month growth. That's an eye-catching figure, though without absolute transaction volumes it's hard to gauge what that actually means. A company processing $100,000 in month one and $170,000 in month two hits that mark, after all. The team is lean—around 15 people—which is both a strength and a constraint as they try to scale.

The Corridors and the Competition

Right now, Zynk supports six currencies: USD, EUR, AED, INR, MXN, and PHP. That's a strategic selection—covering the U.S., Europe, the Gulf, India, Mexico, and the Philippines hits some of the world's busiest remittance corridors. The company is targeting remittance providers, B2B payment platforms, trading networks, neobanks, and payment service providers that want to expand into new markets without building all the compliance and liquidity infrastructure themselves.

They're not alone in chasing this opportunity. The cross-border payments market is expected to hit $320 billion by 2030, according to market analysts. Remittances to low- and middle-income countries alone reached $656 billion in 2023, per the World Bank. That's real money, and it's drawn everyone from Stripe to Ripple to a constellation of smaller startups trying to carve out niches.

What might set Zynk apart—if it works—is the liquidity model. Instead of forcing customers to manage their own treasury operations, the company wants to handle that complexity on the back end, offering developer APIs that support both fiat and stablecoin settlement.

That's appealing in theory. In practice, liquidity management at scale is notoriously difficult, particularly in emerging markets where currency volatility and regulatory uncertainty can turn yesterday's solution into tomorrow's liability.

What Comes Next

The fresh capital will go toward expanding payment corridors, sharpening the company's liquidity management technology, and building compliance infrastructure—table stakes for any fintech with global ambitions. Zynk also plans to forge partnerships with established payment providers, a smart move given how difficult it is to build distribution from scratch in this space.

The team's challenge now is execution. Seventy percent monthly growth sounds impressive, but sustaining that requires more than just good technology. It requires navigating a labyrinth of regulations across jurisdictions, managing liquidity without getting caught offside by market swings, and convincing customers to trust a six-month-old startup with their money flows.

If they pull it off, Zynk could become a meaningful player in a market that's long overdue for disruption. If they don't—well, there's a reason most cross-border payment companies still rely on those expensive, capital-intensive correspondent accounts.
