Oxford Ionics
Founders
Oxford Ionics is a UK-based quantum computing company specializing in trapped-ion technology, distinguished by its proprietary Electronic Qubit Control (EQC) system that uses microwave-based electronics integrated onto semiconductor chips rather than lasers to manipulate qubits. Founded as a spinout from the University of Oxford's Department of Physics, the company rapidly achieved world-record single- and two-qubit gate fidelities and delivered full-stack quantum computers for national R&D programs in the UK and Germany. In 2025, Oxford Ionics was acquired by US-listed quantum computing leader IonQ for approximately $1.08 billion, the largest quantum computing acquisition to date.
