Dr. Lawrence Callahan

Dr. Lawrence Callahan is a Co-Founder and Chief Scientist at Autopoiesis Sciences, a San Francisco-based AI research lab building systems capable of autonomous scientific discovery to accelerate breakthrough research and change how we fight disease.
A chemist by training, Dr. Callahan earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Chicago and a J.D. in Patent and Health Law, with a career spanning nucleic acid chemistry, HIV research, and analytical methods for biotechnology-derived products.
Dr. Callahan is the primary editor of the ISO 11238 substance identification standard and led the development of the FDA's Global Substance Registration System (G-SRS), which assigns unique identifiers to every substance in FDA-regulated products.
He held pivotal scientific and management roles at the FDA, NIH, and the United States Pharmacopeia, and now leads the scientific vision behind Autopoiesis's flagship platforms, including the Aristotle AI co-scientist and Columbus-1 autonomous research system.
Aristotle achieved 92.4% accuracy on GPQA Diamond, a PhD-level scientific reasoning benchmark, and is trusted by researchers at institutions including GSK, Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Stanford, MIT, Harvard, and the FDA.
