Dr. Paul Teal

Dr. Paul Teal is Co-Founder of Wellumio, a medical technology company revolutionizing stroke diagnostics with portable MRI-based brain imaging technology. He brings deep expertise in signal processing and machine learning from his academic career at Victoria University of Wellington.
Dr. Teal earned his PhD from The Australian National University and served as Associate Professor at Victoria University of Wellington, where he specialized in signal processing for audio, biomedical, and communications applications. He was embedded in the engineering department working with Paul Callaghan's team on novel NMR technologies for industrial applications when he met co-founder Dr. Shieak Tzeng in 2013.
Dr. Teal's background in portable magnetic resonance systems for industrial applications proved critical in adapting these technologies for medical use, forming the foundation of Wellumio's breakthrough Axana device. His research has been cited over 2,700 times and spans multiple domains including Bayesian signal processing and machine learning.
Wellumio has raised over $7.2M in its first close of Pre-Series A funding, led by Nuance Connected Capital, with backing from Icehouse Ventures, NZ Growth Capital Partners, and other prominent investors. The company secured a U.S. patent in December 2025 for its proprietary Pulsed Gradient Free Mapping technology.
Wellumio's Axana scanner delivers MRI-based stroke diagnostics in just 4 minutes at the patient's bedside, reducing diagnosis time by over 90% compared to traditional methods. The technology addresses a global market opportunity exceeding $8.9 billion and aims to transform care for the estimated 1 in 4 people who will suffer a stroke in their lifetime.
