Dr. Sergei Obruchkov

Dr. Sergei Obruchkov is Co-Founder, Co-CEO, and CTO at Wellumio, a medical technology company developing portable MRI-based stroke detection devices. He is a medical physicist specializing in magnetic resonance, RF engineering, and biomedical devices.
Sergei earned his B.Sc. from Dalhousie University and M.Sc. from McMaster University, and held research positions at Victoria University of Wellington, University of Adelaide, and University of Waterloo. He co-founded Resonint Ltd, developing portable magnetic resonance systems for industrial applications.
Dr. Obruchkov collaborated with Dr. Paul Teal on portable MR technologies originally designed for industrial field applications like rock samples and ice sheets in Antarctica. This expertise in miniaturizing MRI systems became the foundation for adapting the technology to medical diagnostics.
Wellumio raised $7.2M in its first close of pre-Series A funding in February 2026, led by Nuance Connected Capital, with support from Icehouse Ventures, NZ Growth Capital Partners, and government programs. The company's Axana device received a U.S. patent for its Pulsed Gradient Free Mapping technology in December 2025.
Wellumio's 50kg portable Axana scanner delivers MRI-based stroke diagnostics at the bedside in minutes, addressing a global market opportunity exceeding $8.9B. The company is conducting first-in-human feasibility trials and expanding into the U.S. market with plans for FDA breakthrough designation.
