Dr. Sharif Vakili

Dr. Sharif Vakili is the Co-Founder and CEO of UpDoc, an enterprise-ready clinical AI company pioneering physician-grade agentic AI for managing chronic diseases and medication prescriptions. He is also a practicing primary care physician at Stanford Medicine, where he serves as Clinical Assistant Professor and teaches at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
Dr. Vakili holds an MD from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, an MBA from Harvard Business School, and both an MS and BS in Biology from Yale University, completing his residency in Internal Medicine at Stanford. Prior to UpDoc, he co-founded USMLE Pro, a medical education company, and held roles in Business Development at Translate Bio and Corporate Strategy at Arcellx and Nkarta.
Dr. Vakili pioneered Remote Patient Intervention (RPI), an AI-driven care model that was validated in a prospective randomized controlled trial at Stanford Medicine and published in JAMA Network Open. He serves as an Entrepreneur Advisor at Polaris Partners and has former FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf as an advisor to UpDoc.
UpDoc secured $18 million in seed funding from investors including Polaris Partners, Mayo Clinic, Eli Lilly and Company, the American Diabetes Association, and Oxeon Partners. The company has partnered with Microsoft Azure OpenAI and Google Cloud, and its platform is deployed at Cleveland Clinic, Allegheny Health Network, and UCSF Health.
UpDoc achieved FDA 510(k) clearance for the first software-as-a-medical-device using patient-facing large language models, initially indicated for type 2 diabetes. In its Stanford MIVA Trial, UpDoc's RPI technology delivered a 5x increase in clinical delivery, a 65% improvement in medication adherence, and a 3x enhancement in chronic disease control.
