Dr. Tim Hellwig is Co-Founder and CTO at Refined Diagnostics (formerly Refined Laser Systems), a medtech company pioneering AI-powered, laser-based cancer diagnostics for real-time intraoperative tissue analysis.

Dr. Hellwig earned his Diplom and PhD in Physics from the University of Münster, specializing in nonlinear frequency conversion in optical fibers and ultrafast light sources for nonlinear microscopy, followed by postdoctoral research at the same institution.

Dr. Hellwig recognized that the uniquely tunable lasers he was developing in academia could generate wavelengths no other fiber laser could produce, making them ideal for biomedical imaging and creating a clear commercial opportunity.

Refined Diagnostics secured a €2.7M seed round led by High-Tech Gründerfonds and APEX Ventures, followed by an additional €2.9M growth round led by the Companisto Business Angel Network, with further support from EU and German public funding.

The company's Nobel Prize-recognized Raman laser technology can reduce cancer tissue analysis from hours to minutes directly in the operating room, with a planned market entry in 2027 and laser systems already deployed at research institutions worldwide.
