John Jumper

John Jumper is Director at Google DeepMind, an artificial intelligence research laboratory, where he leads the AlphaFold team that developed groundbreaking AI for protein structure prediction. He was awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry alongside Demis Hassabis for revolutionizing computational biology.
John earned a BS in Physics and Mathematics from Vanderbilt University in 2007, an MPhil in Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics from Cambridge in 2008, and a PhD in Theoretical Chemistry from University of Chicago in 2017. He worked at D.E. Shaw Research on molecular dynamics simulations before joining DeepMind in 2017.
John was named one of Nature's 10 people who mattered in science in 2021 and is a Fellow of the Royal Society. At age 39, he became one of the youngest Nobel Prize winners in Chemistry in 70 years, recognized for AlphaFold's transformative impact on biology.
John has received the 2023 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences, the Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research, the Canada Gairdner International Award, and the Wiley Prize in Biomedical Sciences. AlphaFold has been used by over 2 million researchers from 190 countries.
AlphaFold has predicted structures for over 200 million proteins, essentially solving a 50-year-old problem in biology. The AlphaFold database has accelerated drug discovery, antibiotic resistance research, and enzyme design, with the 2021 paper becoming one of the most-cited publications of all time.
