Kunal Girotra

Kunal Girotra is Founder and CEO of Lunar Energy, a leader in integrated home battery systems and Virtual Power Plant software powering the clean energy transition. He has 20 years of experience as an engineer, technology leader and entrepreneur.
Kunal holds a Masters in Chemical Engineering from Stanford and spent 5 years at Tesla Energy, where he held leadership positions in product, deployment and operations, ultimately serving as head of Tesla Energy until March 2020. At Tesla, he helped launch the country's first VPP with Green Mountain Power in Vermont.
Kunal founded Lunar Energy in August 2020 with a mission to power homes worldwide with clean energy through an integrated hardware and software approach. He built a 35,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Mountain View and acquired Moixa, a leading distributed energy resources management company.
Under Kunal's leadership, Lunar Energy has raised over 532 million dollars across multiple funding rounds from investors including Sunrun, SK Group, B Capital, and Prelude Ventures. The company has deployed thousands of systems and manages 650 MW of devices across multiple continents through its Gridshare VPP platform.
Lunar's Gridshare software manages the country's largest VPP programs, including nearly 130,000 home batteries for Sunrun. In 2025, Lunar's AI-driven software earned customers an average of 464 dollars through VPP participation and saved an additional 338 dollars compared to standard battery modes.
