Max Brunsfeld

Max Brunsfeld is Co-Founder and Board Member at Zed, a high-performance, multiplayer code editor designed for seamless collaboration with humans and AI agents. Built in Rust with a GPU-accelerated UI framework, Zed enables developers to code at the speed of thought.
Max joined the Atom team at GitHub in 2013, driving the editor towards its 1.0 launch. He also worked as a full-stack engineer at Pivotal Labs and studied Computer Science at Humboldt State University.
Max created Tree-sitter, a blazing-fast incremental parsing framework that currently powers all code analysis at GitHub and is used by the most popular editors worldwide. He spent nights and weekends building Tree-sitter while working on Atom during the day.
Zed raised $42M total funding, including a $32M Series B led by Sequoia Capital in 2025 and a $10M Series A led by Redpoint Ventures in 2023. The company has grown to over 150,000 active developers since going open-source in 2024.
Zed has attracted 1,100 contributors and pioneered the use of CRDTs for character-level permalinks in collaborative coding. The founding team also created Atom and Electron, which launched a new generation of desktop applications.
