Mitchell Hashimoto

Mitchell Hashimoto is a software developer and entrepreneur best known as the co-founder of HashiCorp, which was acquired by IBM for $6.4 billion in 2025. He currently works on Ghostty, a terminal emulator, and recently created Vouch, an open-source trust management system for open source projects.
Mitchell studied Computer Science at the University of Washington, where he met his co-founder Armon Dadgar. While in college, he created Vagrant and ran a class registration business that generated $500,000 annually.
Mitchell is the creator of widely-used DevOps tools including Vagrant, Packer, Terraform, Vault, Consul, and Nomad. He is an O'Reilly author and ranks among the top GitHub users by followers and contributions, and holds an FAA private pilot license with instrument rating.
HashiCorp raised $349M in total funding and reached a $5.1 billion valuation before going public in 2021. The company grew to over 2,200 employees and served more than 100 Fortune 500 companies, with products downloaded over 100 million times annually.
HashiCorp's tools became industry standards used by the world's largest companies for cloud infrastructure automation. Mitchell served as CEO for 4 years and CTO for 5 years before transitioning to individual contributor in 2021 and departing in December 2023.
