P.J. Hyett

P.J. Hyett is the Co-Founder and COO of GitHub, the world's leading software development and version control platform, and owner and driver at AO Racing, a championship-winning motorsport team.
Born in Naperville, Illinois, Hyett earned a BS in Computer Science from North Central College, then worked as a senior software engineer at CNET Networks and as a partner at Error Free before co-founding GitHub in 2008 alongside Tom Preston-Werner and Chris Wanstrath.
Hyett partnered with Chris Wanstrath to write the initial lines of GitHub's web application, helping transform a weekend side project into the definitive platform for open-source collaboration used by millions of developers worldwide.
At GitHub, Hyett served as COO from founding through October 2018, overseeing early operational scaling; when Microsoft acquired GitHub for $7.5 billion, his stake was estimated at close to $1 billion. In 2022, he co-founded AO Racing, which has since won championships in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the European Le Mans Series.
GitHub grew to over 150 million users and more than 1 billion repositories before and after its acquisition, while AO Racing claimed the 2024 IMSA GTD Pro title and the 2025 IMSA LMP2 championship, with Hyett himself as a class winner at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
