Paul Giacomin

Paul Giacomin is Co-Founder and Director at Macrobiome Therapeutics, a biotech company developing hookworm-derived therapeutics for inflammatory diseases including IBD, Type 2 diabetes, and chronic wounds. He also serves as Research Development and Partnership Advisor at James Cook University and Senior Research Fellow at the Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine in Cairns.
Paul earned his PhD in immunology from the University of Adelaide in 2008 and completed postdoctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania (2008-2012) under Dr. David Artis, supported by fellowships from the American-Australian Association and NHMRC.
Paul was awarded an Advance Queensland Mid-Career Research Fellowship in 2015 and has published extensively on helminth immunology, including co-authoring an article on helminths and immunity in the 2021 Annual Review of Immunology. He has conducted clinical trials using experimental hookworm therapy in patients with metabolic and autoimmune disorders, commencing a 2018 trial with 27 obese insulin-resistant participants.
Macrobiome Therapeutics, founded in 2020 with Professor Alex Loukas, has raised 196K in funding from investors including Brisbane Economic Development Agency and Tegmen Capital. The company is pioneering nature-inspired biologics based on molecules that parasitic worms use to suppress inflammation, with recombinant proteins showing efficacy in animal models of IBD, rheumatoid arthritis, and asthma.
Paul's research addresses chronic inflammatory diseases affecting millions globally, with Type 2 diabetes alone costing Australia $14.6 billion annually. His work translates decades of host-parasite co-evolution into novel therapeutic approaches that could revolutionize treatment for autoimmune and metabolic disorders.
