Robert J. Moss

Robert J. Moss is Co-Founder and CEO at Valgo, a Y Combinator-backed company building algorithmic safety validation tools for autonomous systems across aviation, robotics, defense, space, and other safety-critical industries.
Robert earned his PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University, where he studied AI safety under Mykel Kochenderfer and received the Christofer Stephenson Memorial Award for best CS master's thesis. He was head TA for Stanford's Decision Making Under Uncertainty and Validation of Safety-Critical Systems courses.
Robert co-authored the textbook on algorithmic safety validation and has published extensively in leading AI journals on black-box safety validation, POMDP planning, and decision making under uncertainty. His research focuses on algorithms for safe planning under uncertainty and black-box safety validation.
Before Valgo, Robert was research staff at MIT Lincoln Laboratory on the core team that designed and validated ACAS X, the FAA-certified aircraft collision avoidance system now used as a worldwide standard. He also worked at Xwing (autonomous aircraft, now part of Joby Aviation) and NASA Ames Research Center.
Valgo accelerates autonomous systems development and certification by finding rare failure events in simulation at a fraction of traditional compute costs. The platform is model-agnostic and applies across industries including autonomous vehicles, aviation, robotics, space, defense, energy, and finance.
