Robert Playter

Robert Playter served as CEO of Boston Dynamics from 2019 to 2026, leading the global robotics pioneer in advanced mobile robotics. He dedicated over 30 years to the company, transforming it from a research lab into a commercial powerhouse.
Playter earned his PhD in aerospace engineering from MIT in 1994, studying under founder Marc Raibert. An NCAA Division I National Champion gymnast at Ohio State University, he applied biomechanics principles to robotics innovation.
Playter led development of humanoid robots including PETMAN and Atlas, and spearheaded Boston Dynamics' entrance into logistics automation with Handle and Stretch robots. He commercialized Spot, the first legged robot for industrial inspection, in 2020.
Under Playter's leadership, Boston Dynamics navigated multiple ownership transitions, from Google to SoftBank to Hyundai Motor Group's $1.1B acquisition in 2021. He served as VP of Engineering, COO, and Director at Google before becoming CEO.
Playter transformed Boston Dynamics from viral video sensation to serious commercial enterprise serving manufacturing, logistics, energy, and construction sectors. The company now deploys robots performing thousands of inspections daily across industrial sites worldwide.
