Ryan Layer

Ryan Layer is Co-Founder and Chief Data Advisor at Codebreaker Labs, a Boulder-based genomic AI company building first-of-its-kind empirical data platforms to interpret the functional impact of genetic variants at scale.
Ryan earned his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Virginia in 2014, followed by postdoctoral research at the University of Virginia and the University of Utah Human Genetics department, before joining the University of Colorado BioFrontiers Institute as an Assistant Professor in 2018.
As a computational biologist and professor with dual appointments in Computer Science and the BioFrontiers Institute, Ryan is a recognized expert in variant interpretation, large-scale sequencing, and functional annotation, having developed foundational tools used across clinical genomics.
Prior to Codebreaker Labs, Ryan served as an Information Operations Analyst at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory and held NIH-funded research roles as Principal Investigator, including leading the Clinical Exome Analysis Pipeline at Children's Hospital Colorado.
Codebreaker Labs raised a $4.5M seed round led by Kickstart in 2025, with the first commercial variant Atlas targeting 100,000 genomic variants and a planned commercial launch in 2027.
