Saron Berhane

Saron Berhane is Co-Founder and Chief Operations Officer of BioScout, an Australian AgTech startup pioneering AI-powered biosecurity and airborne disease detection for the global agriculture industry. She is also a bioengineer, microbiologist, and investor at Blackbird, where she runs Foundry, a program helping researchers turn frontier science into companies.
Saron holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Biomedical, Honours) and a Bachelor of Medical Science (Immunobiology) from the University of Sydney, graduating in 2018. Drawing on her healthcare background, she identified the crossover between healthcare diagnostics and agricultural disease management, which became the founding insight behind BioScout.
Saron has been a vocal advocate for deep tech's role in solving global food security and climate challenges, contributing thought leadership on biomanufacturing's potential for African economic development. Her outsider perspective bridging healthcare and agriculture gave BioScout its competitive edge in a traditionally slow-moving industry.
Prior to BioScout, Saron gained startup experience through the University of Sydney's Incubate program and the Startmate accelerator, and held roles at Syndegen. BioScout has raised over $3M in funding across multiple rounds from investors including Artesian, GrainInnovate, Stoic Venture Capital, Uniseed, and Hort Innovation.
BioScout has been named a Top 100 Innovator by The Australian (2021), a Tech23 company (2020), a FoodTech 500 company (2020), and Australia's Agripreneurs of the Year (2019). Its real-time AI disease detection system has enabled growers to significantly cut back on fungicide sprays, reducing costs and improving sustainability across farms.
