Sergio Charles

Sergio Charles is Co-Founder of Thesis (YC F25), an applied AI lab building the platform to accelerate scientific discovery and automate AI research.
Sergio earned a B.S. in Mathematics and Computer Science and an M.S. in Statistics from Stanford University, where he worked in the Stanford AI Lab alongside Chelsea Finn and Andrew Ng.
Sergio has published research at NeurIPS and ICML, and as early as 2021 wrote about a future where AI could autonomously create its own algorithms, a vision that directly inspired Thesis.
Prior to founding Thesis, Sergio conducted AI R&D at Google X (The Moonshot Factory) and NVIDIA, repeatedly encountering the lack of agentic tooling available to researchers and data scientists.
Thesis achieved state-of-the-art results on OpenAI's MLE-Bench in just one month using only $10k in compute, outperforming research teams at Microsoft, Google, Meta, and Baidu.
