Soumith Chintala is Co-Creator and former Lead of PyTorch, the open-source deep learning framework that powers over 90% of AI research and production worldwide. He currently serves as CTO of Thinking Machines Lab, an AI startup co-founded by former OpenAI executive Mira Murati.

Soumith earned his B.Tech in Information Technology from Vellore Institute of Technology and his Master's in Computer Science from New York University, where he worked under Yann LeCun. He spent 11 years at Meta (formerly Facebook AI Research) from 2014 to 2025, rising to Vice President of AI Infrastructure.

Soumith is a researcher with over 52,000 citations and an h-index of 29 in machine learning, computer vision, and robotics. He previously maintained Torch-7 and created convnet-benchmarks, a widely adopted benchmarking suite used by NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel.

Under his leadership, PyTorch grew from zero to 90%+ adoption in AI, with over 150,000 projects built on the framework and 2 million daily downloads. In 2022, he helped transition PyTorch to the independent PyTorch Foundation under the Linux Foundation.

PyTorch powers AI systems at Tesla, OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat, enabling applications from self-driving cars to drug discovery. The framework is taught in classrooms from MIT to rural India and handles exascale training for foundation models that are redefining intelligence.
