Stephan Ewen is Co-Founder and CEO of Restate, a Berlin-based durable execution infrastructure company built to keep AI agents and distributed applications resilient against crashes and failures.

Stephan holds a Ph.D. in database systems from the Berlin University of Technology and previously worked on data processing technologies at IBM and Microsoft.

He is a co-creator of Apache Flink, the open-source stream processing framework that became foundational infrastructure for real-time data systems across banking, streaming media, and SaaS sectors.

As founder and CTO of dataArtisans (later Ververica), Stephan led the commercial development of Apache Flink; lessons from that work directly shaped Restate's architecture and philosophy.

Restate is used by hundreds of companies including Fortune 500 firms and Replit, has closed multiple six- and seven-figure contracts, and has raised $27M in total funding including a $20M Series A led by Singular.
