Steve Levine

Steve Levine, PhD, is Senior Director of Virtual Human Modeling at Dassault Systemes and Founder and Executive Director of the Living Heart Project, a pioneering initiative creating virtual twin simulations of the human heart. Inspired by his daughter's rare congenital heart defect, Levine launched the project in 2014 to transform cardiovascular medicine through digital simulation.
Levine holds a PhD in Materials Science from Rutgers University and was previously Chief Strategy Officer for SIMULIA, the simulation brand within Dassault Systemes. He was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) in 2017.
The Living Heart Project has grown to over 130 member organizations across 24 countries, including the FDA, medical device manufacturers, and leading hospitals. Levine mentors startup healthcare companies within 3DEXPERIENCE Labs and serves on multiple advisory boards.
The project collaborated with the FDA since 2014 on a multi-year agreement to use virtual twins for in-silico clinical trials, potentially reducing animal and human testing. Hospitals like Boston Children's have used the Living Heart to perform hundreds of complex surgeries by testing procedures on virtual patients first.
Fast Company named the Living Heart Project among its World Changing Ideas for 2025, recognizing its transformative impact on healthcare innovation. The project has enabled medical device companies to accelerate development, reduce costs, and improve regulatory approval processes while advancing personalized medicine at scale.
