Thomas Dohmke

Thomas Dohmke served as CEO of GitHub from 2021 to 2025, overseeing the launch of GitHub Copilot, Copilot Workspace, and GitHub Models. Under his leadership, GitHub Copilot achieved an annual revenue run rate of $2 billion, accounting for more than 40 percent of GitHub's revenue growth.
Dohmke co-founded HockeyApp in 2011, a mobile app distribution platform that was acquired by Microsoft in 2014. He holds a PhD in mechanical engineering from University of Glasgow, UK.
Born in East Berlin in 1978, Dohmke studied computer engineering at Technische Universität Berlin. He played a pivotal role in sponsoring Microsoft's acquisition of GitHub in 2018 while working as a product manager at Microsoft.
In August 2025, Dohmke stepped down as GitHub CEO to become a startup founder again. At the time of his departure, GitHub had over 150 million developers, more than 1 billion repositories, and Copilot had 20 million users.
Under Dohmke's leadership, GitHub Copilot evolved from smart autocomplete to a cornerstone of developer workflows, with adoption skyrocketing to over a million users within just a few months of its preview. He envisions a future where AI tools like Copilot will empower a billion developers by 2030.
