Thomas Rettenwander

Thomas Rettenwander is Co-Founder and CEO at fibionic GmbH, an Austrian DeepTech startup pioneering nature-inspired, bionically optimized fiber placement technology for lightweight composite manufacturing.
Thomas studied plastics engineering at Montanuniversitat Leoben, where his doctoral research focused on bionic fiber structures, and later deepened this work as a lecturer at MCI Management Center Innsbruck before co-founding fibionic in 2021.
Thomas developed fibionic's core bionic design methodology, which places reinforcement fibers only along actual structural load paths inspired by dragonfly wings and tree leaves, earning international recognition for this innovation.
Together with co-founder Johannes Mandler, Thomas built fibionic's patented FFP (fibionic Fiber Placement) technology and secured a EUR 3 million Seed round led by Redstone and Euregio+, with participation from Caesar, Leap435, and angel investors.
fibionic's fully automated production system in Gotzens, Austria can produce up to 500,000 parts per year, achieving cycle times under one minute while reducing material use by up to 60% and product weight by up to 50%.
