Tri Vu

Tri Vu is CEO and Co-Founder of Lumius Imaging, a Y Combinator-backed medtech startup building fast, smart, and accessible 3D ultrasound systems to replace outdated 2D imaging in clinical settings.
Tri earned his B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from the University at Buffalo and completed his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at Duke University (2018-2024), specializing in photoacoustic tomography and deep learning. He went on to serve as a Research Scientist at Duke and a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Oklahoma.
With over 1,600 academic citations, Tri brings deep scientific credibility to Lumius, having published in top journals including Nature Communications and IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging. His frustration with ultrasound technology remaining largely unchanged for decades drove him to commercialize next-generation 3D imaging.
Tri co-founded Lumius alongside fellow Duke PhD graduates Luca Menozzi and Chenhang Li, with scientific leadership from Professor Junjie Yao. The company was accepted into Y Combinator's P26 batch, validating its technology and go-to-market approach. He also brings industry experience from Philips.
Lumius targets a market of 500 million ultrasound scans performed annually, starting with vascular access procedures where roughly 50% of first attempts fail using current 2D technology. The platform aims to become a universal 3D imaging camera for the body, with future applications in blood clot detection, tumor diagnosis, and biopsy guidance.
