Vemund Kval Bakken

Vemund Kval Bakken is Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer at ONiO, a pioneering fabless semiconductor company developing batteryless microcontrollers powered by ambient energy. He sets the long-term technical direction and ensures novel solutions are applied in ONiO's products.
Vemund holds an M.Sc. in Engineering Cybernetics from NTNU (2001-2006) and previously worked at Nordic Semiconductor ASA and Atmel Corporation, where he contributed to multiple patents for stylus and touch sensor technologies. He is based in Trondheim, Norway.
Vemund has been named as an inventor on multiple patents related to wireless stylus technology, touch sensors, and inductive charging systems during his time at Atmel Corporation. His expertise spans ZigBee, GSM, wireless sensor networks, AVR, and USB technologies.
ONiO closed a 5 million euro Series A round in June 2025, led by node.vc and Maki.vc, bringing total funding to over 8 million dollars. The company has developed ONiO.zero, the world's lowest-power microcontroller that cold-starts from under 1 microwatt and runs entirely on ambient energy.
ONiO.zero achieves industry-leading efficiency of 22 microwatts per MHz and can harvest energy from RF, thermal, solar, and piezo sources, eliminating battery dependency for IoT devices. The technology addresses the environmental crisis of billions of batteries ending up in landfills while reducing maintenance costs and enabling truly sustainable IoT deployments.
