Zhao Hang

Zhao Hang is Co-Founder and Chief Science Officer at Galaxea AI, a leading embodied intelligence robotics company developing humanoid robots and advanced manipulation platforms. He is also an Assistant Professor at Tsinghua University's Institute for Interdisciplinary Information Sciences, where he leads the MARS Lab focusing on multimodal machine learning, autonomous driving, and robot learning.
Zhao earned his PhD from MIT in 2019 under Professor Antonio Torralba and received his BS from Zhejiang University in 2013. He worked as a Research Scientist at Waymo from 2019 to 2020, where he co-developed VectorNet, a groundbreaking neural network for autonomous driving prediction.
Zhao's research has been cited over 33,000 times and featured in major media outlets including BBC, NBC, and MIT Technology Review. He was named to Forbes China 30 Under 30 in 2020 and received the 2019 Snap Research Fellowship.
Galaxea AI was founded in September 2023 and has raised over 200 million dollars in cumulative funding, reaching a 700 million dollar valuation. The company serves over 40 clients including Huawei Cloud, Volkswagen, Samsung, ByteDance, Stanford University, and MIT.
Zhao proposed DriveVLM-Dual, the first mass-produced large model for autonomous driving deployed in hundreds of thousands of Li Auto vehicles. His work on VectorNet achieved 18% better performance while using only 29% of parameters compared to ResNet-18, advancing autonomous driving safety and efficiency.
