Arculus Solutions raises $1.95M to retrofit pipelines for hydrogen

Maryland cleantech startup developing coatings that let existing natural gas infrastructure safely transport hydrogen, unlocking billions in stranded assets.

Arculus Solutions raises $1.95M to retrofit pipelines for hydrogen

A North Bethesda startup working on an unglamorous but potentially lucrative problem—how to keep aging pipelines relevant in a hydrogen future—has quietly raised $1.95 million from undisclosed investors. Montgomery County Economic Development confirmed the seed round for Arculus Solutions on Sept. 17, according to an August report in The MoCo Show citing county data that valued the cleantech company at $20.05 million before the investment.

The company filed its Form D with the SEC back in July, according to Form D Explorer, though the money and the public announcement came later.

What Arculus Solutions sells is essentially insurance against obsolescence. The startup develops internal coatings for natural gas pipelines that, in theory, allow existing steel infrastructure to safely transport hydrogen and carbon dioxide without the hydrogen doing what hydrogen does to steel: making it brittle, prone to cracking, and eventually useless. Pipeline operators call this hydrogen embrittlement, and it's the kind of materials science headache that has kept trillions of dollars in natural gas infrastructure from pivoting to cleaner fuels.

The company's pitch is straightforward. Instead of ripping out and replacing pipelines, operators can retrofit them from the inside using Arculus's coating technology. According to the company's website, this involves a partnership with N2 Solutions, a pipeline services firm with operations across the U.S. and Canada. The coatings get deployed through pipeline pigging, an industry term for running devices through pipes to clean or inspect them. In this case, the devices apply a protective layer as they move.

CEO Gianluca Roscioli comes to the problem with a Sc.D. in materials science from MIT, the company says. COO Lewis Dutel previously worked at Shell. The team also includes Biman Nitin Herlekar, listed as a mechanical engineer. It's the kind of credentialing you'd expect for a company trying to solve a metallurgical puzzle that has vexed the energy industry for years.

Arculus Solutions picked up some industry validation in 2025, winning the Energy Venture Day & Pitch Competition at CERAWeek, the sprawling annual energy conference hosted by S&P Global. The win pushed the startup into the Startup World Cup. CERAWeek materials also listed Arculus among participants in the conference's Agora venture showcase, which spotlights energy transition companies.

The broader problem Arculus is chasing has real stakes. Hydrogen atoms, small and aggressive, penetrate steel and weaken its molecular structure under pressure. That incompatibility has left the industry with unappealing options: replace pipelines entirely, an expensive and permitting-intensive ordeal, or limit hydrogen blending to low percentages that don't move the needle on decarbonization goals.

A coating that actually works could unlock stranded assets across the natural gas network, turning potential write-offs into usable infrastructure for a hydrogen economy. Whether Arculus's technology scales at the speed and cost the market demands remains an open question, but the company is betting that repurposing beats rebuilding.

The startup declined to share how it plans to deploy the seed capital or whether it's hiring. Its website lists a North Bethesda address for inquiries.

One clarification: Arculus Solutions has no connection to Arculus, the cold-storage cryptocurrency wallet brand owned by CompoSecure (NASDAQ: CMPO). Technical.ly's Sept. 17 coverage explicitly identified Arculus Solutions as a "Bethesda-based cleantech startup" with no digital asset ambitions, a distinction worth noting given the name overlap.
