Contra Launches AI Agent Commerce Platform, Eyes Creator Economy

Commission-free marketplace unveils payments infrastructure targeting AI agents buying digital services, entering race with Stripe, PayPal, and Coinbase for emerging market.

Contra Launches AI Agent Commerce Platform, Eyes Creator Economy

Ben Huffman has a bold claim: millions of AI agents are already prowling his platform, wallets out, ready to buy.

It's the kind of assertion that sounds either visionary or absurd, depending on how charitable you're feeling. On February 18, Huffman's company Contra—a commission-free marketplace for freelance creatives—launched Contra Payments, billing it as infrastructure purpose-built for a world where autonomous AI agents purchase digital services without human hand-holding. "The first payments platform that lets you sell to AI agents," Huffman declared on LinkedIn, positioning his five-year-old startup against the likes of Stripe, Coinbase, Google, and PayPal.

The question isn't whether agent-driven commerce is coming. Nearly every major player in payments seems convinced it is. The question is whether it's actually here—and whether Contra's millions of AI shoppers exist anywhere outside a pitch deck.

Building the Plumbing Before the Flood

What Contra has built is straightforward enough. The platform handles four transaction types: one-off invoices with guest checkout, subscription and one-time payment links, digital product sales (think templates, prompt packs, downloadable assets), and project-based work with escrow and milestone billing. Payment methods span the predictable range—credit cards, ACH, SEPA, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Cash App—with payouts routed through Airwallex, Stripe, PayPal, Payoneer, or crypto via Coinbase.

More interesting, perhaps, is what Contra takes on as merchant of record. Tax calculation, collection, remittance for digital goods—the compliance headaches that make small creators wince—all handled. Delivery happens instantly post-purchase. Guest checkout means buyers, whether human or algorithmic, don't need Contra accounts to complete transactions.

Pricing follows a familiar tiered model. Card processing costs 2.9% plus 30 cents domestically, with surcharges for international or keyed transactions. ACH runs 0.8%, capped at $5. SEPA costs 0.5% plus 30 cents, capped at $6 including foreign exchange. Platform fees scale by transaction size, though Pro subscribers ($199 yearly or $29 monthly) cut client platform fees in half. Max subscribers ($999 annually or $99 monthly) eliminate them entirely and waive the 2% crypto payout fee.

Zero commission remains Contra's calling card—a pointed contrast to platforms like Upwork or Fiverr that take 10% to 20% cuts.

The Agent Economy: Hype or Here?

Huffman's pitch hinges on creators generating payment links or product pages that AI agents can discover, evaluate, and purchase through guest checkout. Each completed sale builds the creator's reputation on Contra, regardless of whether the buyer has a pulse. The platform's catalog includes formats ostensibly designed for machine consumption: prompt packs, workflow templates, API access subscriptions.

But that "millions of AI agents" figure? No methodology. No partner lists. No traffic breakdowns quantifying agent activity versus plain old human browsing. Contra hasn't published data showing how many transactions are genuinely agent-initiated versus human-directed purchases where AI simply acted as search assistant.

It's a distinction that matters. If an entrepreneur asks ChatGPT to find a logo designer and clicks "buy" themselves, that's not agentic commerce—it's search with extra steps.

Still, the infrastructure play isn't crazy. LinkedIn commentary from AI agent developers following the launch highlighted payment friction as a genuine bottleneck. Creating agents that can autonomously transact requires payment rails willing to accept machine-generated requests without flagging them as fraud or requiring burdensome authentication loops.

A Suddenly Crowded Race

Contra's timing—intentional or not—lands squarely in the middle of an industrywide scramble to define agentic commerce standards.

Stripe partnered with OpenAI last year on Instant Checkout in ChatGPT, then released its Agentic Commerce Protocol in September and October 2025, enabling purchases through AI interfaces for merchants including Etsy. Coinbase launched Payments MCP in October, targeting agent wallets and onramps via HTTP 402-based "machine payments." Google rolled out its Agent Payments Protocol in September with over 60 partners, among them Mastercard and American Express. PayPal announced Agent Ready services in October, with availability expected in early 2026.

Even the card networks joined in. Visa developed a Trusted Agent Protocol to distinguish legitimate agents from bots. Mastercard launched agent checkout initiatives in January 2026. Forter introduced identity monitoring specifically for agentic commerce fraud prevention.

What Contra isn't doing—crucially—is proposing a new cross-ecosystem protocol. Instead, it's adapting existing marketplace primitives (invoices, links, product pages) to be "agent-compatible" while shouldering merchant-of-record responsibilities that liberate small sellers from tax complexity. The differentiation is operational, not technical. Whether that's enough to compete with companies commanding vastly larger engineering budgets remains to be seen.

What Creators Actually Get

Beyond the AI agent pitch, Contra Payments offers practical tools for freelancers navigating the administrative tedium of independent work.

Fixed-rate and hourly project billing. Milestone-based payments with escrow. Dispute assistance within a 14-day window. Contracts can be template-based, localized, or custom PDFs with e-signature support. Payment links, Huffman says, take one click to create and can be edited in real time.

For digital products, creators configure visuals, descriptions, checkout copy, and delivery content. The system allows free ($0) products for lead generation—a tactic familiar to anyone building email lists—and enables delivery updates for past buyers. Funds flow to a Contra wallet, with settlement timing dictated by the chosen payout rail. US debit card withdrawals on the faster option complete in roughly an hour, according to the company.

Payout currencies default to USD, with processor-level conversion fees for non-USD withdrawals. The Coinbase integration offers USDC payouts for sellers who prefer stablecoin liquidity, a niche but growing preference among crypto-fluent creatives.

Ahead of the Market—or Just Ahead of Reality?

Third-party coverage from niche AI and crypto blogs picked up the launch quickly. Mainstream tech press, as of February 21, had yet to weigh in—a telling lag that suggests either the story hasn't broken through or reporters are skeptical enough to wait for proof.

Whether millions of AI agents are already shopping on Contra or whether the company is building infrastructure in anticipation of a market that doesn't quite exist yet will become clearer as transaction data emerges. Huffman's bet is that the creator economy—with its low-friction digital products and highly motivated sellers—will be among the first sectors where agentic commerce graduates from buzzword to balance sheet.

For now, Contra has planted a flag in territory that payment giants, card networks, and fintech upstarts are all racing to claim. The company's zero-commission model and willingness to handle tax complexity offer real value to freelancers, AI agents or not.

But in a market this noisy, being first might matter less than being right about when—and whether—those millions of AI buyers actually show up.
