EDGE Markets Raises $29M Series A for Gaming Payment Infrastructure

CoinFund leads round to build payment rails for surging prediction markets sector, as startup's gaming debit card processes $2B+ in transactions.

EDGE Markets Raises $29M Series A for Gaming Payment Infrastructure

The timing, you could say, is everything.

EDGE Markets pulled in $29.2 million last week, announcing a Series A round just as prediction markets are having something of a moment—perhaps a long one. CoinFund led the funding, joined by Indicator Ventures, Mantis VC, StepStone Group, and Bullpen Capital, all wagering that the infrastructure undergirding this fledgling industry needs serious reinvention.

The New York startup has already moved more than $2 billion through its signature product, EDGE Boost—a Visa debit card issued through Cross River Bank that handles transactions at legal sportsbooks, casinos, daily fantasy platforms, and increasingly, prediction markets. That volume, accumulated over roughly a year, suggests the company found early product-market fit in a sector where payment processing has historically posed challenges.

Now EDGE wants to go deeper, targeting not just consumers placing bets but the market makers and operators running the exchanges themselves.

Two Products, One Thesis

The fresh capital will fund a pair of specialized offerings. EDGE Pro is pitched as a high-throughput deposit solution for market makers operating on CFTC-regulated prediction exchanges—think institutions that need to move money in and out at speed. EDGE Connect, meanwhile, aspires to become a private payment rail, a closed-loop system designed to slash processing fees and keep customers from abandoning platforms mid-transaction.

According to third-party coverage from PYMNTS, EDGE Connect went live on Kalshi, the regulated prediction market exchange, with the ability to funnel up to $10 million daily into accounts in minutes. The company frames this as infrastructure to reduce both operator costs and the dreaded customer churn that plagues gaming platforms when deposit flows stall.

"We believe EDGE is building what will become the default settlement layer for a new category of markets," said Alex Felix, co-founder and chief investment officer at CoinFund. It's the kind of sweeping language venture investors favor, though whether prediction markets coalesce around a single settlement standard remains an open question.

Riding the Wave (Or Creating It)

The fundraise lands amid a surge of attention on prediction markets. Industry analysts cited by Forbes in April estimated the sector could balloon to $240 billion in volume this year—a fourfold increase—with projections suggesting a potential trillion-dollar market by decade's end. The 2024 presidential cycle saw significant trading volume across platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket, activity that caught the eye of regulators and investors alike.

EDGE's founder and CEO, Seni Thomas, has positioned himself directly in these conversations. In April, he submitted comments to the CFTC on behalf of EDGE Markets, advocating for what he termed "proportionate regulation" of prediction markets. The company also claims membership ties with the American Gaming Association, signaling ambitions beyond pure payments into industry advocacy.

Thomas comes from the ad-tech world and media trading desks—an unconventional background for fintech, but one that perhaps trained him to spot arbitrage opportunities in fragmented markets. He holds an MBA from NYU Stern. The company operates out of Manhattan, though like many startups, it's incorporated in Delaware for tax and legal flexibility.

A Crowded Field, With Room to Maneuver

EDGE isn't building in a vacuum. The gaming payments landscape includes entrenched players: Sightline's Play+ operates across more than 80 partners in 40 states, Nuvei offers instant deposit and payout systems, and Trustly has carved out a niche with pay-by-bank rails. These are formidable competitors with established distribution.

But EDGE is betting on differentiation through focus. Its products are purpose-built for prediction markets specifically, a category where payment infrastructure remains, frankly, underdeveloped. The existing EDGE Boost card supports daily limits up to $1 million and integrates responsible gaming tools—including a feature that requires a designated "co-pilot" to approve increases in spending caps. It's a nod to growing regulatory scrutiny around problem gambling, and a feature that could prove valuable as prediction markets expand.

The card runs on Visa's network, meaning it works anywhere that accepts Visa, rather than requiring bespoke operator integrations. Previous partnerships include Choctaw Casinos & Resorts (announced in April) and the World Series of Poker, where EDGE Boost served as a preferred payment method.

EDGE's earlier seed round raised $17.2 million, closed in late 2024, so the company has now pulled in more than $46 million in total—enough runway to scale, though perhaps not enough to fend off well-capitalized competitors indefinitely.

Navigating Regulatory Fog

The prediction markets sector remains a patchwork of regulatory uncertainty. Arizona courts weighed in on jurisdictional questions last month, and federal-state tensions simmer over how to classify and oversee these platforms. Are they gambling? Financial instruments? Something else entirely?

EDGE's strategy—building infrastructure rather than operating markets—may offer some insulation from those debates, though payment processors aren't exempt from scrutiny. Banking regulations, anti-money laundering rules, and state-level money transmission requirements all apply, and navigating that thicket requires both legal sophistication and regulatory goodwill.

Still, there's a logic to the pitch. If prediction markets do scale, they'll need rails that can handle volume, comply with evolving rules, and offer operators a way to reduce the friction that drives users away. Whether EDGE can build those rails faster than incumbents can adapt—or before a larger fintech decides to wade in—will determine if this bet pays off.

What Comes Next

EDGE plans to roll out EDGE Pro and EDGE Connect following the close of the Series A. PYMNTS reported that five additional platforms beyond Kalshi are slated to integrate EDGE Connect "in the months ahead," though the company hasn't publicly confirmed partners.

The involvement of CoinFund, a crypto-focused investor, is worth noting. It suggests confidence that regulated prediction markets will require specialized financial plumbing—and that the eventual winners in this space may look more like infrastructure plays than consumer apps. EDGE seems to be positioning itself as exactly that: the boring-but-essential layer that lets flashier platforms run.

With $2 billion already moving through its consumer product, the company has some proof of concept. Now the question is whether it can translate that traction into dominance as the prediction markets ecosystem matures—or whether it's simply one more player in what could become a commoditized, low-margin business.

For now, the bet is on.
