Endra Raises $50M Series A to Automate MEP Engineering with AI

Stockholm-based Endra lands one of construction tech's largest Series A rounds from a16z just 19 months after founding, automating complex building systems design.

Endra Raises $50M Series A to Automate MEP Engineering with AI

When Stockholm-based Endra told Andreessen Horowitz it could automate the tedious work of designing fire alarms, electrical grids, and plumbing systems for commercial buildings, the venture firm didn't just write a check. Four partners co-signed the deal.

That kind of partner consensus is rare—and it underscores how seriously Silicon Valley is taking the long-overdue digitization of construction, an industry that still relies heavily on manual drafting despite decades of CAD software. On June 1, a16z led Endra's $50 million Series A, one of the largest early-stage construction technology rounds on record. The company is barely 20 months old.

The round values Endra's approach—using artificial intelligence, computational geometry, and physics simulation to generate building system designs in minutes rather than weeks—as a wedge into what a16z calls a "$150 billion-plus global services market." That figure may be optimistic; Norrsken describes the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) engineering sector as a "$79 billion industry." Either way, the opportunity is substantial, and the work remains stubbornly analog.

From Trading Floors to Construction Sites

Endra's technical co-founders, Gustav Hammarlund and David Rydberg, previously collaborated on Goldman Sachs' low-latency trading infrastructure in Stockholm and across Europe—a background that suggests an unusual pedigree for a construction software startup. CEO Niklas Lindgren, a serial entrepreneur who previously built access-control company Sectragon, teamed up with COO Anton Juric, a longtime business partner, to round out the leadership quartet.

The founding team raised a €3 million (approximately $3.4 million) pre-seed from Norrsken VC in May 2025, followed quickly by a $20 million seed in December led by Notion Capital. Norrsken returned for the seed, joined by a cluster of industry angels including Maximilian Viessmann—a name that carries weight in European HVAC circles—and members of Sweden's Höglund family. By the time Endra sat down with a16z, it had raised multiple rounds in rapid succession.

Joe Schmidt, David Haber, Caroline Goggins, and Zabie Elmgren—the four a16z partners who backed the Series A—are betting that momentum translates into a new category. No other investors were named in the June 2 announcement, though that may simply reflect the size of a16z's commitment.

The Pitch: 300 Hours to 30 Minutes

Endra's platform plugs directly into Autodesk Revit, the dominant design software in architecture and engineering, and spits out 3D models, 2D technical drawings, and code-compliant documentation. The company's first module tackles fire alarm systems, supporting regulatory standards including NFPA 72 in the United States, BS 5839 in the UK, and DIN 14675 in Germany. US and UK compliance frameworks are in beta testing; other building systems—electrical, plumbing, HVAC—are listed as "coming soon."

A case study featured on Endra's website claims a fire alarm design project was completed in 30 minutes, compared to an estimated 300 hours using traditional methods. That's a 600x improvement, though the company has not published detailed validation or said how often such gains are replicable. Tech.eu, citing data from the December seed round, reported efficiency gains "exceeding 70x" in early deployments—still remarkable, if more modest.

The platform accepts standard file formats (IFC and DWG) and exports to Revit, AutoCAD, and PDF. Endra says it does not train its AI models on customer data and encrypts all information in transit and at rest, a posture meant to reassure engineering firms wary of leaking proprietary designs into a black-box algorithm.

Whether clients trust that promise remains to be seen. But some are willing to test it.

Big Names, Small Pilots

Three weeks before the Series A was announced, AFRY—a Swedish engineering consultancy with 18,000 employees and projects across Europe, Asia, and the Americas—disclosed a "strategic collaboration" with Endra. The partnership will explore AI-driven MEP design for electrical and fire safety systems, though AFRY stopped short of committing to a full rollout.

Nordic engineering firm Rejlers announced a similar pilot last September. And senior managers at Ramboll, another European engineering giant, posted on social media in March and April referencing integration discussions—though no formal partnership has been announced, and it's unclear whether those talks have progressed.

That's a respectable roster of early adopters, but it's also a collection of experiments rather than signed contracts. Endra is offering early access to its platform in the EU, UK, and US, according to its website, and the company now employs between 11 and 50 people—a wide range that suggests either rapid hiring or cautious LinkedIn updating.

The Tailwinds Are Real

The timing may be better than it looks. Axios noted recently that surging demand for data centers—power-hungry facilities that require intricate cooling, electrical, and backup systems—is creating urgent need for faster MEP design. Advanced manufacturing plants, particularly in semiconductors and batteries, face similar pressures. Both sectors are expanding quickly, and neither can afford six-month design cycles.

Construction technology has long been a laggard. Even firms that adopted Autodesk Revit years ago still rely on manual workflows for much of the detailed design work. MagiCAD and similar plugins automate some tasks, but they don't replace the engineer. Endra is trying to do exactly that—or at least reduce the engineer's role to quality control.

That puts Endra in direct competition with Augmenta, which offers AI-assisted electrical and MEP modeling integrated with Revit, and a fragmented field of smaller automation tools. The category is still being defined, which perhaps explains why a16z brought four partners to the table.

What Comes Next

Endra confirmed in the a16z announcement that it is hiring across Stockholm, New York, and San Francisco, a footprint that signals both US expansion and continued European growth. The company has not disclosed timelines for rolling out modules beyond fire alarms, and it remains to be seen whether electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems prove as amenable to automation—or whether regulatory complexity in those domains slows deployment.

For now, Endra has capital, momentum, and a roster of household-name engineering firms willing to experiment. Whether that's enough to reshape an industry that has resisted software-driven transformation for decades is the $50 million question.
