FLOWPAY Secures €30M Facility to Launch AI Lending in Netherlands

Prague-based embedded finance startup lands debt facility from Fasanara Capital and enters first Western European market, targeting €400B SME financing gap.

FLOWPAY Secures €30M Facility to Launch AI Lending in Netherlands

The ambition sounds almost quaint in today's fintech landscape: become "the next Czech unicorn." But FLOWPAY, a Prague startup barely four years old, is placing a significant wager that European small businesses are hungry enough for embedded financing to make that dream more than founder bravado.

On March 19, Fasanara Capital—a London alternative asset manager overseeing some $4.5 billion—extended a €30 million debt facility to FLOWPAY. The credit line will bankroll working-capital loans to SMEs across Europe, starting with what the company bills as a milestone: its official Netherlands launch this past November, the first real push beyond Central Europe's familiar terrain.

For a startup that's spent most of its existence serving Czech and Slovak merchants, the Netherlands represents something bigger than geography. It's a beachhead into Western Europe's far larger—and significantly more competitive—SME lending market.

Amsterdam as Proving Ground

FLOWPAY touched down in the Dutch market on November 11, 2025, though the groundwork began years earlier. The company had cycled through the ABN AMRO and Techstars Future of Finance Accelerator in Amsterdam back in 2022, an experience that apparently left enough of an impression to shape expansion plans. By late last year, FLOWPAY B.V. materialized as a Dutch legal entity at an address on Fred. Roeskestraat in Amsterdam. A Dutch-language site went live. Partnerships with local payment provider Buckaroo and other regional platforms followed.

The mechanics are straightforward, if not exactly revolutionary: FLOWPAY plugs directly into the e-commerce platforms, point-of-sale systems, and accounting software that merchants already live in—Shoptet, Shopify, Lightspeed, WooCommerce, the usual suspects. Loan amounts run from €2,000 to €100,000, with repayment windows of one, three, six, or twelve months. Applications pull business data from POS terminals, e-commerce dashboards, and bank accounts. AI algorithms spit out instant offers. Identity verification and e-signing happen online. In April, the company raised its Czech and Slovak financing ceiling to CZK 2.5 million, roughly €100,000.

CEO William Jalloul frames it as addressing Europe's estimated €400 billion SME financing gap—a figure cited so often in fintech pitch decks it's practically liturgy at this point. "We built Flowpay to have the back of small businesses," the company's site declares. Jalloul has spoken publicly about aspirations to become a leading embedded lending solution and, yes, that Czech unicorn.

Whether the market agrees is another matter.

Crowded Waters

The Dutch landscape FLOWPAY is wading into doesn't exactly lack for competition. ABN AMRO's New10 already powers embedded SME lending up to €1 million for partners—a tenfold advantage in loan size. Amsterdam-based FINOM recently pulled in €92.3 million to expand credit lines ranging from €2,000 to €50,000 for Dutch SMEs, overlapping almost perfectly with FLOWPAY's offering. Factris secured a €100 million facility for SME factoring. Qredits, the microfinance provider, landed a €40 million facility from the European Investment Bank. Dutch central bank data shows fintech platform lending to SMEs hit €3.2 billion outstanding by the end of 2024.

In other words: the gap may be large, but the crowd trying to fill it is substantial.

Fasanara Capital, for its part, has developed something of a pattern here. The firm has backed similar SME-focused fintech lenders across Europe, including recent facilities for UK neobank Tide and Saudi Arabia's Forus. Matt Kus of Fasanara spoke in trade coverage about the partnership's role in "bridging the SME funding gap," though such statements tend to accompany every deal in this space.

FLOWPAY's earlier funding round—€2.1 million in seed capital raised in March 2024 from Techstars, Soulmates Ventures, and DEPO Ventures, plus angels including Mark Ransford and Martin Herrmann—was modest by today's inflated fintech standards. The Fasanara facility represents a different kind of bet: not equity dilution but debt leverage, a sign the company believes its unit economics can handle borrowed capital.

Scaling With Borrowed Tools

Perhaps sensing the need for operational efficiency as it stretches into new markets, FLOWPAY has partnered with IBM to deploy watsonx.ai for metadata processing and underwriting workflows. The move reads less like technological innovation and more like pragmatic recognition that manual underwriting doesn't scale when you're chasing a continental footprint.

The company remains relatively lean—between 11 and 50 employees, according to Crunchbase—which could be either prudence or constraint depending on how you squint at it.

What happens next will likely hinge on execution in the Netherlands. If FLOWPAY can carve out meaningful market share in a landscape already thick with well-funded competitors, the Western European expansion story gains credibility. If the Dutch experiment sputters, the company may find itself back in Central Europe wondering whether the beachhead was premature.

The €30 million facility buys time and runway. Whether it buys traction is the question every debt-fueled fintech eventually has to answer—and usually sooner than founders expect.
