Harmoni raises $10M to orchestrate factory operations with RFID

The Akron startup's platform uses RFID and real-time data to automate factory tasks, saving 200+ hours per operator annually as manufacturers face a 1.9M worker shortage.

Harmoni raises $10M to orchestrate factory operations with RFID

Harmoni, an Akron-based manufacturing software startup, secured $10 million in Series A funding led by Bessemer Venture Partners, the company announced September 9. The round values the two-year-old company at an undisclosed amount.

At the center of Harmoni's pitch is what it describes as a "factory orchestration system" that uses RFID tags and on-machine terminals to automate the sort of administrative tasks that drain productivity on the shop floor: labor tracking, work instructions, quality logging, machine activity records. The company claims its platform frees up more than 200 hours per operator annually by eliminating what co-founder David Caputo calls "non-productive admin work at the machine."

The timing is no accident. U.S. manufacturers are staring down a projected shortage of 1.9 million workers by 2033, according to research from Deloitte and the Manufacturing Institute published in April 2024. Harmoni is betting that factories will pay to squeeze more output from the workers they still have.

The system itself is straightforward in concept if not execution. Harmoni deploys tablets at each workcenter that aggregate data from ERP systems, machines, operators, and long-range RFID readers. Workers tap an RFID badge to clock in and pull up their assigned job. The platform then retrieves revision-controlled instructions, logs machine activity, and manages ERP transactions in the background. Harmoni says the system integrates with existing enterprise software rather than ripping it out, and can be deployed in weeks rather than months.

On Tuesday, Harmoni also introduced HAL, an AI assistant layered atop the orchestration platform. HAL interprets operational context in real time across orders, machine status, labor activity, and material movement. Caputo described it to Business Insider as enabling workers to "literally speak to the machines," though how literally remains to be seen.

Both Caputo and co-founder Adam Ellis arrived at the problem from different angles but shared industry roots. Caputo spent a decade as an electrical engineer before moving into finance, where he covered large-cap industrials. He later co-founded a private equity fund that acquired manufacturing businesses. Ellis built a career as a manufacturing consultant and ERP integration specialist, according to his LinkedIn profile.

The company reports serving roughly 40 customers, with aerospace and defense representing its largest segment. One named client, WessDel—a San Jose precision components supplier—deployed the platform to streamline clocking and machine logging. Harmoni says additional customers are in the pipeline, though it declined to provide updated figures.

Harmoni takes pains to distinguish itself from manufacturing execution systems and point solutions like MachineMetrics or Datanomix, which many factories stitch together into what Caputo calls a "patchwork." The company argues that MES platforms operate at the planning and scheduling layer, while Harmoni works at the human-machine interface where execution actually happens.

The broader strategy hinges on retrofitting legacy operations. The U.S. has some 280,000 factories running older machinery, and Harmoni is targeting those existing plants rather than chasing startups that are building fully autonomous greenfield facilities from scratch. "We've built this specifically to arm these guys to compete with these autonomous factories," Caputo said.

The new capital will fund product development, sales expansion, and further work on HAL. Kent Bennett, a partner at Bessemer, noted in the announcement that "Harmoni is building a new operational layer for manufacturing that connects people, machines, and systems across the factory floor."

Caputo framed the pitch in familiar terms: "Manufacturers don't need another disconnected application...they need a system that helps work happen correctly, efficiently, and in real time."

Harmoni operates out of offices in Akron and New York. The company employs between 11 and 50 people, according to LinkedIn, though that figure may not reflect recent growth tied to the fundraise.
