Hybron Raises $25M Seed Led by Marque for Defense Composites

El Segundo startup lands oversubscribed round for manufacturing tech that makes aerospace composites 100x faster, targeting artillery shells and jet engine parts.

Hybron Raises $25M Seed Led by Marque for Defense Composites

Brennan Lieu and Aaron Guo aren't shy about their claim: their El Segundo company can manufacture aerospace-grade composite components up to 100 times faster than conventional methods. Bold, perhaps—but the defense industry seems to believe them.

Hybron Technologies announced April 9 that it had closed a $25 million seed round, oversubscribed and led by Marque Ventures. That's $5 million more than the company initially sought, according to the company's own statements. The final tally suggests that somewhere between the first pitch deck and the wire transfers, investors grew more convinced.

What Hybron manufactures reads like a checklist of things the Pentagon desperately wants more of: composite casings for 155mm artillery shells. Turbine fan blades for jet engines. Compressor blades that the company says have already run at full power inside a fighter jet engine. All of it made lighter, faster, and—crucially for Washington—entirely within U.S. borders.

The funding round pulled in a syndicate that maps cleanly onto defense tech's current investor landscape: First In, DTX Ventures, Veteran Ventures Capital, Ultratech Capital Partners, Bravo Victor Venture Capital, Gaingels, ZEA, and the American Center for Manufacturing & Innovation. Matt Ocko, co-founder of the prominent Silicon Valley firm DCVC, participated as an angel investor.

Speed as Strategy

Founded in 2022, Hybron emerged from the Northrop Grumman Technology Accelerator with a manufacturing process that the founders say collapses production timelines without sacrificing the performance characteristics defense contractors demand. The company's components can shed up to 90 percent of the weight of traditional aerospace metals while maintaining structural integrity.

Weight matters in ways that spreadsheets capture but don't quite convey. A lighter artillery shell means more rounds per pallet, more pallets per cargo plane, more ammunition delivered to the front. A lighter compressor blade translates to fuel efficiency, which translates to range—often the difference between a mission completed and one aborted.

The technology has attracted attention beyond venture capital. Hybron has signed an agreement to operate at ACMI's Munitions Campus, part of a sprawling 1,100-acre National Security Industrial Hub that broke ground in Indiana in February. ACMI participated in the seed round both as investor and infrastructure partner, a dual role that hints at potential facility expansion beyond Hybron's current California headquarters.

A Supply Chain Problem, and an Opportunity

The timing is no accident. Recent global conflicts have exposed uncomfortable truths about America's defense manufacturing capacity, particularly around artillery production. The Pentagon has publicly pushed to reshore critical supply chains, creating openings for startups that can credibly promise domestic production at scale.

Hybron emphasizes its all-American supply chain, positioning itself as part of the solution to a problem the defense establishment only recently acknowledged exists. Whether the company can deliver on that promise—and do so profitably—remains the open question that $25 million is meant to answer.

The investor mix reflects broader shifts in where defense capital is flowing. Marque Ventures focuses exclusively on early-stage national security companies. First In backs operator-led teams, a preference that aligns with Lieu and Guo's backgrounds. DTX Ventures and Veteran Ventures Capital both concentrate on dual-use applications that straddle military and commercial markets, while Ultratech Capital Partners targets what it calls critical technologies: advanced materials, manufacturing, defense, space.

What Comes Next

Hybron plans to use the capital to scale production, expand headcount, and service what it describes as a growing portfolio of defense programs. The company's careers page listed seven open positions as of mid-April, heavy on manufacturing roles—CNC machinists, composites technicians, aerospace program managers. The kind of hiring that suggests ramping production rather than prolonged R&D.

The startup operates from a facility on East El Segundo Boulevard, in the heart of California's aerospace corridor. Some may remember the address under a previous identity: Hybron filed for a trademark under its current name only in January, having previously operated as BladeX Technologies. Rebranding in the defense world often signals a strategic shift, though the company hasn't detailed what prompted the change.

For now, Hybron occupies an enviable position—well-funded, aligned with Pentagon priorities, and making promises that, if even partially fulfilled, would address real capability gaps. The harder part begins now: proving those 100-times-faster claims hold up not in controlled tests but in the unforgiving economics of scaled manufacturing.
