Illume Labs launches text-based AI health companion

YC-backed startup brings wearables, lab results, and genomic data into a single conversational AI you can text anytime—competing with WHOOP and Oura's new lab integrations.

Illume Labs launches text-based AI health companion

Most health apps want you to check a dashboard. Illume Labs thinks you'd rather just text.

The startup, which emerged from Y Combinator's recent cohort, launched Taro on July 20—a health companion that lives entirely in iMessage. Instead of logging into yet another platform to decode wearable stats or lab results, users text questions and upload photos of meals. Taro responds with interpretations drawn from connected devices, bloodwork, and nutrition logs, all threaded into a running conversation.

It's a deliberately stripped-down interface for an increasingly cluttered market. WHOOP and Oura both rolled out blood-panel integrations in mid-2026 through partnerships with Quest Diagnostics, while Quest itself introduced an AI explainer for lab results. Function Health now charges $365 annually for twice-yearly testing packages paired with digital interpretation. Illume is betting that threading all those signals through a single text stream—rather than asking users to toggle between apps—will prove simpler than the dashboard sprawl that defines most digital health tools.

Wearables, Labs, and a Proactive Daily Nudge

Users can message Taro to log meals by snapping photos, upload bloodwork PDFs, or link sleep and recovery data from wearables. The service sends unsolicited daily summaries highlighting what shifted in a user's metrics, what those changes might signal, and suggested next steps. When new lab results or device data arrive, Taro generates an interpretation without waiting for a query.

A web interface supplements the texting: users can assemble custom dashboards or run regressions comparing variables like meal timing against sleep quality or workout intensity versus recovery scores. The company has floated genomic data as a future layer, though current functionality centers on devices, nutrition, exercise logs, and uploaded diagnostics. An August blog post on Illume's site listed ten sample prompts for texting Taro.

MIT Founders With Biotech Credentials

Pari Latawa and Frank Lee, both MIT graduates, started Illume after working in computational biology and machine learning research. Latawa studied computer science and molecular biology, conducting stints at the Broad Institute, Eli Lilly, and MD Anderson. Lee, who holds degrees in computer science and mathematics, built agent-based systems at Windsurf and spent time in Pulkit Agrawal's lab at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. The team is currently listed as three members on Y Combinator's site, with Ankit Gupta serving as the accelerator's primary partner contact.

Crowded Field, Fragmented Users

The health-data integration space has grown crowded in recent months. WHOOP announced Advanced Labs in March, pairing wearable metrics with blood panels processed by Quest. Oura followed midyear with a similar offering called Health Panels, also leaning on Quest's network. Both moves pushed established wearable brands into the multi-signal interpretation territory Illume now occupies.

Consumer adoption has kept pace. Rock Health's 2025 survey found that nearly six in ten U.S. adults now own at least one wearable or connected health device. Separate polling by KFF and Pew Research indicated that roughly a third of Americans have tried AI chatbots for health-related questions—a usage pattern Illume is aiming to capture with a less app-heavy approach.

Pricing Built for Early Commitment

Illume offers founding-member pricing at $10 monthly or $100 annually, a markdown from standard rates listed at $30 and $300. That tier unlocks daily proactive texts, unlimited question-and-answer against personal data, and interpretation of all uploaded labs and device feeds. A free version limits users to five daily queries, five uploads, and one wearable connection. Access currently runs through a waitlist; the company reported over a thousand signups on social media following a late-August showcase event with other Y Combinator startups focused on personalized health, including RonanRx, GutGutGoose, and Locale.

"Illume creates one home for your health and gives you a personal health companion you can text," the founders wrote in their Y Combinator launch announcement. The team presented at the accelerator's demo day in September, pitching a model that collapses fragmented health tracking into a single conversational thread—one text at a time.
