Long Beach startup's chromatography platform aims to break China's rare earth monopoly as defense acquisition rules tighten in 2027

Maglut raises $3.1M to rebuild US rare earth supply chain

A Long Beach startup that spent the past year operating in quiet has emerged with $3.1 million in backing to tackle what its founder calls one of America's most glaring industrial blind spots: separating rare earth elements without relying on China. Maglut Heavy Industries disclosed the seed round Wednesday, led by Wave Function, Nova Threshold and Julian Capital, according to Axios Pro Rata.

The company, founded in July 2025 and incorporated in Delaware before registering in California, declined to share its valuation. What it will discuss is its chromatography equipment, designed to extract individual rare earth oxides from domestic feedstock at what CEO Curtis Wu describes as commercially viable purity levels. The technology sidesteps traditional solvent extraction, a process Wu characterizes as punishing on labor, energy use and the environment.

Timing matters here, perhaps more than the founders initially anticipated. Pentagon procurement rules take effect in January 2027 that bar the Defense Department from purchasing magnets containing neodymium or samarium sourced from China, per DFARS clause 252.225-7052. Beijing, meanwhile, tightened its grip on rare earth exports twice in 2025: licensing requirements arrived on April 4 for medium and heavy rare earths, then expanded on October 9 to cover items produced abroad using Chinese-origin materials. Wu told Tectonic Defense the regulatory vise creates what he termed a "vulnerability" for American manufacturing.

Maglut's pitch centers on its ARC-1 system, which the company says achieved pilot-scale validation in July 2026. The startup claims its equipment separates real-world feedstock into individual rare earth oxides at 99.9 percent purity. Unlike competitors who license resin technology, Maglut designs and manufactures its own, a distinction the six-person team considers critical to controlling costs and performance.

Wu's background runs through biologics purification at Amgen and life sciences investing at Verition, according to Tectonic Defense. Co-founder and chief operating officer Azhar Yerzhanova brings investment banking experience and a focus on materials-sector venture capital, Tectonic Defense reported. The company also employs part-time advisors and has courted international partnerships. It joined a U.S. Department of Commerce delegation to the Astana Mining Congress in June 2026 and met with Israeli government and industry figures the following month at the invitation of Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The competitive landscape remains fragmented. MP Materials runs the only North American facility integrating rare earth mining through magnet production, but the broader separation sector splinters across mining, midstream processing and manufacturing, per analysis from the Center for Strategic and International Studies. China's export controls, tracked by CSIS and the International Energy Agency, have intensified pressure on Western alternatives to gain traction.

"Rare earth processing is one of the clearest examples of a sovereign capability America let atrophy," Wu said in the company's August 26 press release announcing its emergence from stealth. "The countries that control access to critical minerals will shape the next era of technology."

The investor roster reflects the startup's crossover appeal. Wave Function Ventures concentrates on aerospace, defense, energy and robotics, per its website. Nova Threshold, headquartered in Wellington, New Zealand, backs what it calls engineering-first-principles companies, according to CB Insights data. Julian Capital, run by Julian Shapiro, lists Maglut on its public portfolio page as of August 2026.

Corporate formalities offer a glimpse of Maglut's methodical approach. The company secured U.S. Patent and Trademark Office registration for "Maglut" and "Maglut Heavy Industries" on August 12, 2025. Early filings listed a San Francisco address before the company settled into its current Long Beach operations.

Whether Maglut's technology can scale beyond pilot validation remains the central question. The rare earth sector has seen promising technologies stumble at commercial production, where consistency, cost and environmental compliance intersect. For now, the startup holds $3.1 million and a window of regulatory tailwinds. What it does with both will determine if it joins the ranks of strategic suppliers or becomes another cautionary tale in critical minerals processing.
