Mithrl raises $20M to accelerate drug discovery with AI

San Francisco startup's 'Scientific Decision Engine' combines biomedical world model with agentic AI to compress months of R&D analysis into minutes for top pharma companies.

Mithrl raises $20M to accelerate drug discovery with AI

Mithrl, a San Francisco startup building what it calls a "scientific decision engine" for pharmaceutical research, said September 15 it raised $20 million in Series A funding led by Obvious Ventures. The round brings the company's total raised to $24 million, following a $4 million seed from Bonfire Ventures in November 2024.

The deal adds another data point to a crowded field of AI-native drug discovery ventures competing to prove their models can meaningfully accelerate the notoriously slow path from molecule to market. Whether any of these platforms will deliver on their promises remains an open question, though investors continue to place sizable bets.

Mithrl's pitch centers on Eos, software that deploys inside customer environments and layers what the company describes as a proprietary "biomedical world model" atop existing enterprise knowledge bases. The platform is designed to field natural-language queries from research teams, then route those questions across multiple AI models while managing context and token efficiency.

The startup claims its system can help drug developers "go from idea to IND 50% faster," referring to the investigational new drug application filed with regulators before human trials. Bold promises are standard in this corner of the market. Mithrl backs its assertion with internal benchmarks showing the platform delivers sixteen times more primary evidence per answer than frontier AI models operating alone, and achieves a 0.96 scientific correctness score compared to 0.60 without its biomedical layer. Those figures come from expert-rated evaluations, though the company has not published details on methodology or independent verification.

"The platform doesn't guess. It reasons from trusted studies and each client's in-house evidence," CEO and co-founder Vivek Adarsh said in a statement.

Mithrl says it has deployed at several top-ten pharmaceutical companies, clinical-stage biotechs, and genomics partners, though it declined to name them. The startup pointed to more than half a dozen customer-owned patent filings it says stem from discoveries powered by its software. One testimonial featured on the company's homepage, attributed to a director at Aurion Biotech, claims the platform "accelerates that by 32× on average," without specifying the baseline or process being measured.

The company also announced a collaboration with Elephas Biosciences to integrate live ex vivo tumor profiling with its agentic AI system for immunotherapy response research. That partnership was co-presented at a recent AACR conference, according to Elephas.

Adarsh and co-founder Shara Balakrishnan, who serves as CTO, both hold PhDs from UC Santa Barbara. Adarsh's research background centers on synthetic biology, based on his ResearchGate profile and conference appearances. The leadership team includes Aqib Hasnain as Head of Scientific AI. Mithrl's LinkedIn profile lists between 51 and 200 employees, and the company is headquartered at 44 Montgomery Street in San Francisco. Recent job postings show open roles for senior software engineers and machine learning specialists.

The funding arrives as AI-driven drug discovery companies navigate a maturing but still largely unproven landscape. Recursion Pharmaceuticals recently merged with Exscientia, Alphabet operates Isomorphic Labs, and well-funded independents like Insilico Medicine, insitro, Iambic, and Genesis Therapeutics continue to raise capital and advance pipelines.

Industry observers remain cautiously optimistic. A recent IQVIA report cited "early evidence of stronger success rates for AI-enabled programs among emerging biopharma," though a Nature Reviews Drug Discovery analysis noted that most AI-first projects remain in preclinical stages, with several dozen having reached Phase I or II trials. The real test will come when these programs face the full gauntlet of clinical development and regulatory approval.

Rohan Ganesh, a partner at Obvious Ventures, framed Mithrl's approach as a response to the pharmaceutical industry's heterogeneity. "There is no one-size-fits-all, and that's exactly where Mithrl is building," he said. Obvious closed a $360 million fifth fund early last year with a focus on planetary, human, and economic health, according to prior reporting.

Mithrl declined to disclose its valuation. The company said proceeds from the round will fund development of what it calls a second-generation platform anchored by the Mithrl-1 agentic AI system and an updated biomedical world model. In a recent blog post, the founders indicated they plan to launch that model in the coming weeks.

Headline, AGI House, and several undisclosed pharmaceutical executives also participated in the round.
