QOSMIC Raises $3.3M to Build Laser 'Highway' Between Earth and Space

Accel and Prosus back Bengaluru startup building optical ground stations and satellite terminals promising 100x faster data transfer than RF at fraction of the cost.

QOSMIC Raises $3.3M to Build Laser 'Highway' Between Earth and Space

QOSMIC Satellite Systems, a year-old venture tucked away in Bengaluru's tech corridors, just secured $3.3 million in seed funding to pursue what its founders describe as a fundamental rewiring of how satellites talk to Earth. The June 24, 2026 round, led by Accel and Prosus with backing from South Park Commons and ARTPARK at the Indian Institute of Science, arrives as the race to commercialize optical space communications intensifies.

The company's proposition is straightforward, if ambitious: replace the radio frequency infrastructure that has dominated satellite communications for decades with laser-based optical terminals that can move data faster and, crucially, far cheaper. QOSMIC claims its systems can deliver downlink at $1 per gigabyte—a sharp contrast to the $3 to $17 range typical of RF providers today. Speed is the other selling point. QOSMIC claims its optical ground stations and satellite terminals transfer data at rates 100 times faster than conventional RF systems.

Whether those economics hold at scale remains to be seen. But the technical specs suggest QOSMIC isn't simply iterating on existing designs. The company is targeting data rates between 1 and 100 Gbps using 1550 nanometer C-band lasers, with tracking precision measured in sub-arcseconds across apertures ranging from half a meter to a full meter. It's the kind of precision required when you're trying to aim a laser beam through the atmosphere at a satellite hurtling across low Earth orbit.

From Lab to Orbit

CEO Shreyaans Jain, CTO Dr. Rohit Ramakrishnan, and IISc professor Aloke Kumar incorporated QOSMIC on April 25, 2025, spinning out work incubated at ARTPARK, the institute's AI and robotics technology park. By March 2026, the startup had been selected for the inaugural Atoms X cohort—a co-investment program run by Accel and Prosus backing six so-called "LeapTech" startups focused on deep technology.

The team has moved quickly since then. QOSMIC successfully tested its optical communications system over a 10-kilometer ground link, demonstrating the pointing, acquisition, and tracking capabilities necessary to lock onto a moving target and maintain a stable connection while transferring data at high speeds. Accel's portfolio page notes the company has reached Technology Readiness Level 6, a NASA-originated metric that suggests the technology has been demonstrated in a relevant environment—though discrepancies exist in public reporting. Accel references a demo distance of "5+ km," while Inc42's June coverage cites the full 10-kilometer test. Minor inconsistencies, perhaps, but telling in an industry where every kilometer counts when validating performance claims.

More significant is QOSMIC's partnership with TakeMe2Space, a LEO orbital data center operator also known as TM2S. The collaboration will see QOSMIC supply optical terminals while TM2S handles gimbals, bus interconnects, and attitude control systems—the mechanical and guidance infrastructure needed to keep those lasers pointed in the right direction as satellites tumble through orbit. The first QOSMIC terminal under this arrangement is slated to launch in the second quarter of 2027, integrating into TM2S's MOI constellation.

It's the kind of deal that transforms a startup from a lab curiosity into a potential commercial player, assuming the hardware performs as advertised once it leaves the ground.

Weather, Scale, and the Ground Station Problem

The seed funding will bankroll deployment of operational optical ground stations and satellite laser terminals for what QOSMIC describes as a global customer base, though the company hasn't yet disclosed specific contracts. Plans call for scaling integration, testing, and manufacturing operations while hiring across optical, mechanical, and electronics engineering—disciplines that don't exactly grow on trees, even in Bengaluru's talent-rich ecosystem.

QOSMIC's vision extends beyond individual terminals. The company is designing a network of more than 50 ground stations, operated as a unified system with weather-adaptive scheduling—a necessity given that clouds, rain, and atmospheric turbulence remain laser communication's Achilles' heel. The startup is targeting 99.9% uptime, which would require careful site selection, redundancy, and the kind of predictive weather modeling that doesn't yet exist in many parts of the world. Deployment timelines, according to the company, would run under six months per site.

One early agreement: an MOU signed in August 2025 with Amity University Lucknow to develop and operate an advanced ground station facility. Whether that translates into a fully operational node in QOSMIC's planned network—or remains a pilot project—will become clearer as the company moves toward in-orbit testing and first commercial deployments following its ground demonstrations.

A Crowded Sky

QOSMIC enters a market that has attracted serious capital and strategic maneuvering in recent months. Observable Space closed a $90 million Series A in May 2026. Rocket Lab received regulatory approval in March to acquire Mynaric, a laser terminal maker that has struggled with production delays but holds valuable intellectual property. France's Cailabs raised €57 million last September to scale optical ground station production, betting that European demand for sovereign space infrastructure will support expansion.

The competitive pressure is real, but so is the opportunity. Satellite constellations continue to proliferate, data generation in orbit is accelerating, and RF spectrum is increasingly congested. Optical communication—once the domain of experimental NASA missions—is edging toward commercial viability. Whether QOSMIC's bet on cost and speed will differentiate it from better-capitalized rivals depends on execution in the months ahead.

For now, the company has funding, a technical roadmap, and a partnership that could put its hardware in orbit next year. Not bad for a startup barely a year past incorporation. But then, perhaps that's the only pace that makes sense when you're chasing satellites.
