Rio Health raises $4.5M to scale 20-minute pharmacy network

WhatsApp-based pharmacy delivers meds in 20 minutes across Delhi NCR, plans to expand from 3 to 15+ dark stores with Version One Ventures backing

Rio Health raises $4.5M to scale 20-minute pharmacy network

Rio Health, a WhatsApp-based pharmacy startup that promises prescription medicines in under 20 minutes across Delhi's sprawl, said in late September it has closed a $4.5 million pre-Series A round led by Version One Ventures. The infusion brings total capital raised since September 2023 to roughly $6.5 million and will bankroll a dark-store expansion from three locations to more than 15 over the coming year.

Existing backers Xeed Ventures, Good Capital and Amplify participated in the round, according to an announcement reported by Business Standard. Entrackr, citing regulatory filings, put the post-money valuation near ₹170 crore, though Rio Health declined to confirm that figure.

The company's pitch is straightforward: text or voice-message a prescription in Hindi, English or Hinglish, send a photo, and wait for a knock. Behind that simplicity sits a layer of compliance. An AI system parses each order, then a licensed pharmacist verifies it before dispatch from dark stores that currently serve Indirapuram, Gaur City and Sector 78, according to the company's website. Operating hours stretch from 8 a.m. to 1 a.m., with no delivery fee and no minimum order.

Each fulfillment hub stocks more than 20,000 SKUs and covers a roughly three-kilometer radius. For long-tail demand, Rio Health taps a distributor network.

Repeat Business and Revenue Targets

Volume metrics hint at traction. The startup processed more than 30,000 orders in September 2026, with nearly 80 percent coming from repeat customers, Business Standard reported. Average order value hovers between ₹600 and ₹700. Management is targeting annual run-rate revenue north of ₹150 crore within nine to 12 months from the raise—ambitious, though not unusual in a sector where scale often arrives faster than profitability.

"This funding will help us strengthen our technology, improve how we predict neighbourhood-level demand, and make reliable medicine delivery available to many more customers," cofounder Ankur Agrawal told Business Standard.

Agrawal and cofounder Amit Ahuja previously built Gobbly, a retail-tech startup the pair founded in 2019. Both hold engineering degrees from IIT Delhi and IIT Guwahati, respectively. The company operates under the legal entity Rapidsurge Innovations Pvt. Ltd., incorporated in Gurugram in September 2023, and holds FSSAI and drug licenses alongside a dispensing pharmacy in Loni, Ghaziabad. Rio Health has been hiring across operations, supply chain, technology and last-mile delivery, though exact headcount fluctuates as the company scales.

Crowded Field, Vertical Focus

The competitive landscape is thick. Horizontal quick-commerce giants Blinkit, Zepto and Swiggy Instamart have all added or are eyeing medicine delivery, as Version One Ventures noted in a blog post announcing its investment. Specialized pharmacy rival Plazza raised a $15 million Series A in July from Accel, Elevation Capital and Nexus Venture Partners, Moneycontrol reported. Established e-pharmacy incumbents like PharmEasy, Tata 1mg and Apollo 24/7 round out the field.

"India's pharmacy market is well suited to quick commerce, but solving it requires more than fast delivery," Version One Ventures partner Boris Wertz said in the firm's announcement. Version One is betting that pharmacy-specific infrastructure and pharmacist verification create enough of a moat.

Market projections vary, but Inc42 Datalabs estimated in June 2026 that quick-commerce gross merchandise value in India could hit $68 billion by 2031. Amazon announced plans in September to invest $3 billion in Indian quick-commerce infrastructure through 2030, Reuters reported, a signal that the space remains attractive despite margin pressure.

Rio Health said the new capital will fund technology enhancements for neighborhood-level demand prediction alongside the physical expansion. Whether 15 dark stores will be enough to fend off horizontal players with deeper pockets remains an open question, but for now the startup is focused on deepening coverage in Delhi-NCR's existing service areas while the funding lasts.
