Rise Reforming launches platform to turn waste gas into chemicals

YC-backed startup converts wastewater biogas into supply-secure chemicals with containerized plants, claiming first syngas production from biogas in the Americas.

Rise Reforming launches platform to turn waste gas into chemicals

A shipping container sitting beside a wastewater treatment plant in suburban Chicago doesn't look like much. But inside, George Rose and his co-founders believe they've cracked a puzzle that has vexed the chemical industry for decades: how to turn methane that would otherwise vent into the atmosphere into valuable industrial feedstock, and do it economically at small scale.

Rise Reforming, the Y Combinator–backed startup Rose leads, announced in September that it produced synthesis gas from wastewater biogas during a pre-pilot run at the Chicagoland facility. The achievement, modest as it sounds, represents a proof point for distributed chemical manufacturing in a sector that has spent the past century clustering ever-larger facilities along the Gulf Coast.

The company's pitch is straightforward, if audacious. Wastewater plants, farms, and landfills across America generate biogas that today either gets flared off or converted to electricity at poor margins. Rise Reforming wants to park containerized chemical plants at those sites and transform the gas into dimethyl ether, methanol, and other industrial chemicals that currently require massive capital investments and proximity to pipeline infrastructure.

"Co-location allows us to skip middle men," CTO Lucas Zubillaga Maharg wrote in July, distilling the startup's value proposition to its essence.

The technology itself runs a three-step process: intensive gas cleaning to strip impurities down to parts-per-billion levels, bi-reforming that hybridizes dry and steam methane reforming to generate synthesis gas, then catalytic synthesis to produce the final chemicals. Rise Reforming says a proof-of-concept unit logged more than 1,800 continuous hours earlier this year, though no independent validation of that runtime has been published as of September 2026.

What makes the approach noteworthy is the containerization. The entire system fits inside a standard shipping container and can theoretically deploy wherever biogas accumulates. That stands in contrast to an American chemical industry that has concentrated more than 95 percent of its ethylene capacity in Texas and Louisiana, according to Department of Energy figures. Rise Reforming frames its distributed model as supply-chain insurance, a hedge against the risks of centralization.

The startup has assembled the kind of early traction that gets venture investors' attention. A $650,000 pre-seed round closed late last year. As of July 2026, total funding raised exceeded $1.7 million, according to the University of Chicago's Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering, where all three co-founders earned degrees. Backers include Y Combinator, the 776 Foundation, the Department of Energy, LongJump VC, and former Netflix CFO David Wells. The company indicated in May on a Japanese trade site that it is pursuing a $6 million round for its first biogas-to-methanol pilot, with $750,000 soft-committed.

Rose previously worked at Highland Electric Fleets and Nexamp before diving into carbon capture at Mantel Capture. Zubillaga Maharg came from Avangrid's offshore wind division and Argonne National Laboratory, where he focused on nuclear waste research. The third co-founder, COO Jona van Oord, handles sales to wastewater facilities and agricultural operations. In September, the startup brought on Scott Roney, who spent two decades at Honeywell and LanzaJet, as senior chemical process engineer.

Team size varies depending on the source. Y Combinator lists four employees; LinkedIn showed between two and ten employees as of September 2026. The discrepancy likely reflects contractors or advisors not counted in the official headcount.

The market opportunity is real, if fragmented. The American Biogas Council reported in February that the U.S. biogas industry captured 780.7 billion cubic feet annually by the end of last year, with wastewater plants accounting for nearly half of roughly 2,600 biogas facilities nationwide. Most of that gas today either generates electricity or simply gets burned off.

Rise Reforming isn't operating in a vacuum. Oberon Fuels already runs commercial renewable DME plants for aerosol propellants and LPG blending. Maverick Synfuels sells skid-mounted methanol systems targeting biogas and landfill gas. M2X Energy secured DOE funding last year for mobile methane-to-methanol units. In Europe, ICODOS commissioned a CO₂-to-methanol plant in Mannheim in mid-year using biogas from a wastewater facility, and Denmark's TOBIAS project demonstrated modular biogas-to-methanol technology in a similar timeframe.

The competitive landscape suggests both validation and challenge. Competitors like Oberon Fuels and Maverick Synfuels are pursuing similar opportunities in biogas conversion; the question is execution and unit economics.

Rise Reforming's first pilot container arrived at the Chicagoland wastewater plant in July, according to the company. Commissioning is slated for the first quarter of next year, the founders wrote on Hacker News. The business model diverges from typical equipment sales. The startup plans to build, own, and operate units rather than sell them outright, van Oord said in the same online discussion.

That approach requires far more capital but could generate recurring revenue and deeper customer relationships. It also means Rise Reforming needs to prove not just that the technology works, but that it can scale operations and manage multiple sites simultaneously.

The company has racked up some early credibility markers: first place in the DOE's EnergyTech University Prize in April 2024, the European Aerosol Federation's 2025 Start-Up Award awarded in January 2025. Rise Reforming claims its economic models show price parity with fossil DME and competitive green methanol costs even before factoring in federal tax credits. Independent validation of those projections hasn't been made public.

Binding biogas supply agreements and multiple memoranda of understanding with producers were signed in April, along with a conditional DME offtake agreement for the first commercial unit. The company declined to identify counterparties, citing confidentiality.

"We're doing YC to close many more big purchase orders and build the commercial engine needed to rapidly scale this company," Rose said in July. The comment captures both the ambition and the challenge. Distributed chemical manufacturing has been a recurring dream in the industry, promising resilience and efficiency. Whether Rise Reforming can translate that vision into durable economics remains the central question. The September synthesis gas production offers an early data point. The real test comes when containers multiply and operations shift from proof-of-concept to profit-and-loss.
